My AR hasn't arrived yet but I have already ordered ammo for it.  I've ordered Federal XM193, Federal M855 (SS109) and Black Hills 68gr BTHP (red box - new manufacture).  Should I inspect every round before loading my magazines?

Depends on how much you ordered.

If you only bought a box of each......sure.

If you bought a few 1000 rounds.....ya go ahead

Gotta a Snickers?

Inspect some and look for anything out of the ordinary.

Those are all quality ammo.

Not too many problems with those.

What kind of AR did you get?

If ANY of the LC is "PD" you had better inspect every round.

I buy quality stuff, I never inspect the ammo.  Into the mags it goes.  If my eyes happens to catch something amiss, sure, I will pull it.  But that has never happened.

PD is the loose stuff, right?  My XM193 was in boxes of 20

Correct.  Boxed, in my experience, has been good to go.

I inspect my boxed ammo, and have found one or two bullets that have been pressed too far into the case. Not bad odds, considering those two rounds were out of 2,000+. Just a quick glance and I run my finger across the primers (with the ammo still in the plastic thing) to feel any misinstalled primers. Only takes 2 or 3 seconds, so I'm ok with it.

I hand sort XM193 ammo. Even the non PD stuff.  Lots of dented shoulders.

It's always a good practice to look at the ammo you're loading into the magazines, even good ammo is messed up once in a while.

Even the XM193, i was still inspect.  There still several dings you should watch out for.  I had a couple dented in so much, i dont feel safe shooting.

I have yet to see a dented round in boxed XM193 that I wouldnt shoot.  Dented shoulders are not a big deal.... unless it's more of a crushed shoulder (huge), or a crease line.

I simply twist the ammo in my fingers as I load mags.  There's no sense in handling ammo twice. Just take the time before you go to the range.  It doesn't take any longer... the only difference is, you're paying attention while you load.

I do this with all ammo, regardless of quality.

This is a good argument for having a crap load of mags loaded all the time... this way you're never in a hurry.

I picked up a box of Winchester 5.56mm ammo the other day.  I found it really dirty, the metal casings were dented and had different types of markingshe.  I am not trying to nock on winchester.  I just find that if I am paying a bit more for these guys I should be getting a bit more.  Does anyone know if winchester outsources their .223/5.56MM rounds,  I heard that do with their shotgun shells.

Sorry, only part of the comment belongs on this page.

Sounds like the Q3131 ammo.  Again..  Dents are nothing to really worry about.  I bought some of this ammo too!  Odd that they don't have the same headstamps.  They must have batched a bunch of different primed brass for the production run.

I haven't fired any of it yet.

Yeah, they were crushed.

Of the approx 4000 rnds of XM193 ammo i hand sorted about i found about 60 rounds i wouldnt trust for duty use, as the dents deformd the case to the point they might not chamber. those were set aside for plinking.  i found 2 rounds that didnt look safe to shoot and went into the trash.

This is the worst round (XM193 boxed) I found out of 1.5K I loaded in bandoleers.

I check every round before I load it in a mag.  I only shoot boxed XM193, Q3131, Q3131A, and Black Hills Blue Box.  I've found a couple rounds of XM193 that I pulled, but otherwise everything's been good.  Nonetheless, my AR's mean too much to me to risk a KB over something as simple as checking my ammo.

When checking my ammo, I'm running my finger over the primers to make sure they're flush with the case.  I'm also checking the neck where the bullet protrudes from the brass, as well as the brass.  Anything else I should be looking for?
