I am just trying to make sure here. But I have a couple sets of these. The other day I pulled my mags apart to clean them. I oiled up the springs, tried for a few to remove the rust. But how long can these springs sit with the film of rust that does not come off before I need to unload them and re oil the spring? I am starting to think I should replace all my CS with SS if that is going to be a big deal. Thanks, -Martin Edit: Also does this expose my rifle to rust? |

HUH? I've never disassemble my mags for maintenance. Are these USGI mags? Oiling mag parts is not good for business. Oil and my mags are kept FAR APART. I knew a guy who did this on his pistol. It was his family's protection. When he shoot out his ammo about half of the rounds didn't ignite due to oil contaminating the primers. I saw this first hand. |

----- Chrome silicon springs are more resistant to taking a set and will last longer than stainless springs. Chrome silicon springs will develop a film of rust. This will not affect the performance of the magazine. You should clean and oil chrome silicon springs as part of your regular maintenence. That is from a webpage promoted on these forums. But my oiling is light I take a patch get it just wet and wipe. There is no standing oil on them. Is it wrong to actualy oil CS springs? On another webpage there is no mention of needing to oil CS springs. -Martin |

www.davidtubb.com/tcom_images/downloads/sss_form.pdf $10.95 for one spring??? Must be the gold plating that keeps them rust-free.

Joe, I've seen you try to push these DT springs a couple of times now but at over $10 each, I think you are nuts. I can buy 5 SS springs with money left over for the cost of one of those springs and I'll bet money that 5 (or even 2-3) SS springs will last longer then 1 CS spring. CS springs are not magic and they will eventually need to be replaced just like any spring They may be great springs but at that price, the cost to benefit ratio is just not there IMO. |

Well thanks for keeping track on my post's |

Don't buy all the hype about CS springs in weapon applications. They are terrific for ultra high speed applications / heat and fatigue. They are not the best choice for the tightly confined space in firearms application. Music wire and SS fill the bill quite nicely in these roles. Why assume that a SS magazine spring will ever fail? If it is made correctly, it won't. TD is a shooter...I'm an engineer.......you make the call. Hotgun |
Well in honesty, I only remember one other thread were you mentioned these Tubb springs and I was going to bring this up then but didn't have time. Just to clarify - My comments were specifically focused on Tubb CS mag springs that you recommended, not CS springs in general. I just bought some CS springs to try out because from what I've read, CS springs do have some useful properties for some situations but the ones I bought cost ~$1.90 ea, not $10. The Tubb version may be better but 5x better? I seriously doubt it. You mention Grant and Denny but unless I'm mistaken, neither of them are using Tubb springs, specifically these $10 mag springs so using their name to support your position on these springs is not really valid. |
|
What i meant with denny and grant is they choose to use cs springs over ss springs in gerneral not the tubb springs. But as i said i agreed with you in they are some what over priced. But its my money and if it makes me fell warm and fuzzy to have these $10 cs spring's then more power to me.But i have seen you in other post's to respect your views and you seem like a good guy so dont take me being a smart ass to personal. |

| Also david tubb/ISMI cs spring's are better quailty then the c produtcs cs springs, that's why the cost more. I Talked to G&R tactical he also said that his ss/ music wire spring's start to give out aroung the 3000 to 4000 round mark (as i remember mine stared haveing problums around that mark) his ISMI spring last about 8000 rounds and still work.He just replace's his once a year. |
You right, if they work for you and you don't mind spending the money then more power to you. Don't mind me, I come across pretty strong (OK, I act like an ass BTW - if you plan on buying more of those ISMI mag springs and have an C&R licence, you can get them a lot cheaper from Brownells ($7.68 for 30 round mag springs) Not cheap enough for me to buy if your were happy paying $10 something, $7.68 should feel like a steal! |
Damn! How much oil did he put in there? I haven't disassembled a mag in years. Back when I first got into ARs and I only had about four mags, I used to take them apart and wipe down the springs. I quit doing that long ago because it seemed unnecessary. I'm damn sure not doing it now that I have nearly fifty mags. The only way I would do it now is if the mag got dunked in water. |
