I found a Bushy today with what at first appeared to be an A1 upper as it had the A1 sight assembly, A1 forward bolt assist hanndle, but had a brass defloected machined into it like an A2. Does anyone have any info on the variant? Just the first time I have seen it.

Sounds like a c7 upper receiver

Was a common and popular option before Aimpoints became popular.  An A1/C7 upper "upgraded" with the A2 or even a same plane rear sight was "state of the art" on the old AR15 email lists.
