I found a Bushmaster at Academy Sports for 859.00. I didnt have them take it down to look at it, but it did have the flattop upper with an A2 Front sight and a colapsable stock, more than likely a 16" barrel.
My question is, would you buy a BM at that price, and how hard would it be to remove the front site and change the gasblock to a railed for flip ups?
Will it still fire .223 and 5.56 ammo or does BM chamber it in .223 only.
I would use the .223 just for plinking probably and then order a KO-TONICS 6.8 upper for hunting.

Or should I just spend 150.00 more and get the RRA Varmint that has the 2 stage trigger and winter gaurd.

I build my guns, and for that money you could build a rifle exactly as you want it with a two-stage trigger and flip-up sight without screwing around with it at all. So I'd say no.
You can change the FSB pretty easily, just drive out the gas tube roll pin and taper pins on the FSB and pull it off; slide on the flip sight, check alignment with gas port, insert gas tube, tighten the clamp screws or set screws (use loctite), roll pin the gas tube back in place. It will fire either .223 or 5.56.

Building my own would be tough to get the lower in, my local dealer is a real butthead on the transfers and very unreliable. He charges 40.00 if he decides to do it, and even then I have heard stories of people having a very hard time getting their stuff from him. However he is better at entire guns and I am not sure why so go figure...

That doesn't sound bad for a flat top. Most are in the 900's around here. I have one with the 16 inch hbar. Its nice but I prefer my 2 rock rivers I bought since. They both have stainless barrels and the 2 stage trigger and will shoot rings around the bushie.

Shop around for someone else.  My local guy wanted to charge me $45 for a transfer, but I went to my hometown forum and found someone who would do it for $20.  They are getting my business now.
