I picked up a FA M16 not to long ago that has a filthy buffer tube. The only way it could have gotten this bad is if it was shot suppressed for at least 500+ rounds...The buffer and spring were totally coated in carbon fouling, on the buffer there was no conical head, it was a sphere of carbon once we cleaned the carbon out, the buffer cone was visible. I cleaned the buffer/spring but how do I clean out the tube and what should I use?
Thanks! |

For the tube itself, I'd use a strong solvent, like brake cleaner. Spray/pour the stuff in with the drain hole at the back blocked and let it sit for a while, then pour it out and start scrubbing. You can leave the spring in the tube for this part, because the solvent will clean it up too. The buffer is another matter. That polymer bumper at the end should probably be kept away from even non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
And even though you have a very nasty cleaning job ahead of you on this new gun, I still hate you for having it. I'm still several years away from being able to afford a RR myself.

| Y'all are the best, thanks for the quick replies fellas. I do have a nasty job ahead of me. Soon once its all clean I intend to keep it that way...just bought 2 LWRC uppers for this beast...1 16" that I'm putting a SPR M4 on to shoot supressed and a 10.5" CQB for usual Full auto Joy...this way I get to keep the lower clean, and somewhat stress free. |
