Hello,
A friend of mine has DPMS AP4 LR308, I currently have 200 rounds through it. It seems the buffer spring makes a lot of noise during it's function. I have a LR308B and doesn't make a fraction of the noise. It has well over a thousand rounds through it.  They both have as issued buffers and springs.  Is there anything that can be done or some kind of additive that can be used to possibly quiet it down. Would the round count make a difference? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

lubing the spring will cut down on noise

What kind of lube would you recommend?

Whatever you use for the rest of the gun. I hit mine with froglube.

try a bit of heavier grease.

Some readers have suggested a lube or grease for the spring.  While I agree that takes care of the noise, a greased spring requires one other bit of care.  It is possible that grease could clog the hole at the rear of the buffer tube, with the result that you add a bit of resistance to the buffer moving to the rear.  That slowdown COULD be enough to impact functioning.  I have had it happen only once and that particular AR had thousands of rounds through it before cycling became a bit sluggish.  Cleaning out the tube and then reapplying grease solved the problem, but it's something I watch for on heavily used ARs.  Again, rare, but possible.

BTW, the JP captive spring system solves ALL problems with noise and functions like a champ.

A strip of fatty bacon wrapped around one of the back coils works awesome!!!

But grease is safer.....you could use bacon grease!!!!

It's part of the deal...

IGNORE IT.

Some Ar15s are noisier in the buffer department than others for whatever reason. One of my rifles has a noisy buffer spring. 10 years later, it still shoots fine, it's just as noisy. It doesn't hurt anything.

Its the nature of the beast. IMHO I would not grease or oil the spring that just collects dust and other nasties that makes a hell of a mess to clean up.
Just deal with the twang.

A JP SCS is the best solution.

In my 10.5 w yhm phantom (ss thread on) it has made more difference than the silencer. (With proper hearing protection of course! And shooting in an open area) it feels really neat, almost like a piston guns recoil. Very good product this

I noticed it on my SR556.  SPROOOIIINNNGGG   I don't worry about it.  Figure nothing is going to hear it over the report of the rifle besides me.

IMO anywhere 2 pieces of metal are touching and moving against each other should have some kind of lube.  Use a little bit if white lithium grease and see if it quiets it down and it will not hurt anything.
