My Colt started making funny noises in the area of the collapsible buttstock recently.  I removed the buffer and buffer spring and checked everything out.  Everything seemed o.k. until I noticed the opaque end of the buffer seemed to have a ridge where it joins at the metal part.  That ridge was catching on the spring making a ratcheting sound as it hit/caught each loop of the spring.  It didn't use to do this.  What's up?

FBArms,
The areas that I clean up on the buffer are the bumper roll pin ends to prevent it from snagging the spring, and the flared end to the buffer where the spring presses against the lip.

The roll pin is contoured to the buffer tube with a flat file, and the end is just hand rolled to relieve the edge to prevent it from scraping the receiver extension walls and causing deep groves.

If the buffer to bumper end is not beveled, then just use a file and take the edge off the tube.

But, just keep in mind that this cleaning it to prevent the buffer spring from binding.  Even then, the spring will still make a sprang noise due to the coils making contact with the tube.  A little lube will quiet down the noise.
