Why would you want a 25???? and Not a 20? or a 30?

Not being a smartass, I'm truly bewildered.

The waffle mags are a bit rough, finish wise.  These the same, or do they feel smoother?

I have some waiting for me at home, but I'm away another week.

I have noticed a few people say the finish is rough.  Mine is very smooth, with a very dark gray anodizing.  I wonder if they made them in different batches or something.

I was actually convinced mine was black and was regretting my purchase until i cleaned all the oil off and took it outside and compared it to Gray anodizing.  I still wish they were lighter but i am pretty happy with the mag, its definitely good quality.

Anyone who has an original able to compare them?  From what I can see from the originals in "The Black Rifle", the repro's are slightly longer.  IE, the magazine extends slightly below the pistol grip on the new ones when inserted, where as the originals seem to be just about even with the grip when inserted into the rifle.

What is the best way to do the white colorfill?

In this case I used white paint and a stencil, not engraving. It was supposed to be a “try before you buy” on engraving using water based paint. I stripped it off to play around some more, but the paint pulled the color out of the anodization and left a gray shadow behind. All in all, I’m not the best one to advise you on this matter, LOL...

White crayola crayon, or white out for the quick & cheap route.  Otherwise, Brownells sells a special paint stick for color fill that works great.  I, however, am going the other route, and removing the white from my receiver and replacing it with black, so that it looks more like the originals.

White grease pencil. Cheap as chips at the local Wally World or art supply.

White is what I used but I think there is an "antique white" that has a touch of yellow to make it look like it's been on the rifle for decades.

I got the "off white" furniture wax filler.  I may test it out on a non-important lower first.

I saw antique white white and flipped a coin on it.

Amazon Product
  • Great for touching up wood furniture nicks and scratches
  • Color Finish: Off White
  • Easy to use wax stick, just scrape or cut off amount needed. Then apply pressure on the scratched area to evenly spread the wax out

I wish I could mimic this old timer!

I used a couple of steel number punches, with a wedge of wood as a dolly and a flat head trim hammer. Took a good first hit to move it, but then I just worked it flat. You can also cut it off.

Not sure I understand the question, but if you are asking why I removed the bump, it is because I have an NDS prototype lower that does not have the channel. It is flatten or remove in order to use the magazine with this type of lower.

The 25 round magazines were originally only used in the prototype rifles. In fact, an original ArmaLite produced 25 round magazine won’t even latch into a non-prototype rifle, due to differences in magazine catch geometry between the two rifle types.

Some people suggested that the reproduction “prototype” 25 round magazine should not have the redundant “magazine over insertion bump”. That way it would work in both modern AR’s and in the NDS prototype rifles, and it would fit and function in both types without any modifications or problems. On an AR, the top of the magazine will contact machined cut outs in the upper receiver which cover the full length of both feed lips, when the magazine is fully inserted. This makes the “bump” an unnecessary, “why-not?” evolutionary design feature. It added nothing to the cost of the rifle or magazine, so “why not?”. That’s fine, until you are trying to build an “as authentic as possible” prototype rifle.

For some reason, this idea was not universally liked, and we ended up with the “bump” on the side, which now must be pounded flat...
3/29/2019 8:53:03 AM EDT
[#42]
The more I think about it, I'm wondering if it's actually a good deal considering that these magazines need to be cut to the correct length.  If you have to cut and reweld anyway, doesn't it make more sense to buy three steel 20-rd mags instead (if you plan your cuts, you can make two 25-rd mags out of three 20-rd mags)?  I'm usually happy to cut Brownells some slack over inaccuracies, due to understanding realities of bringing retro parts to market, but an extra half inch on this magazine is a pretty big screwup.

Agreed.  Not sure how they came to the length they did as I assumed they had access to at least dimensions of the original.  Hopefully gen 2 will be the correct length?

As to the anti over insertion bump being "unnecessary".  All major magazine manufacturers have over insertions built into their mags, some even have multiple (IE the pmag has the bump AND a tab on the back spine to prevent over insertion).  So it must still be more of an issue than you think.

Finally home from a 30 day trip.  Yeesh.

Extra half inch or not, I'm digging the look.

Color is a bit dark, but not enough to complain about.

Unlike my Brownells waffle mags, this finish is pretty smooth.

Worth $60?  Sure... why not go in for one?  Oops, I got three.

As for colorfill, I'm getting cold feet.  It's not an 80% lower so it has NDS markings.  Color fill it all?  Just safe-fire and the Armalite logo?   Leave it alone entirely?

The bump adds an extra measure of strength to prevent the magazine from being over inserted, which could damage the magazine’s feed lips and cause the rifle to jam. This would be an issue in extreme circumstances, such as diving to the ground and landing on the rifle- stuff that happens to combat rifles, and soldiers all too often. The presence of magazine over insertion features on a PMAG is understandable and essential, considering their intended real-world use.

For a reproduction of a prototype AR15, some concessions are made, sacrificing practicality and utility for appearance and historical accuracy. I don’t think that many of the prototype AR15 builds, nor the admittedly oddball (from a strictly functional view) 25 round magazines will be seeing rough service.
3/31/2019 11:06:16 PM EDT
[#47]
Started modifying my prototype mag today, and got the size just right.  Now to cut and bend the tabs, smash the insertion bump, and recut the mag catch notch.  BTW, there is a nice smooth blued finish on the mags underneath the rough textured finish.

Then it's not for you. Originals are many, many hundreds of dollars AND don't even work in modern AR15s due to dimension differences. These are for the people who want a semi-accurate representation of those early mags that they won't feel too bad about using and/or beating up.
