I am new to ar rifles and the search feature on this forum is lacking.

Is it OK to use brake cleaner to clean the parkerized and anodized aluminum on an a15?

I plan on using motor oil or LSA for lube.

I've been using brake cleaner and/or carb. cleaner for a couple of years now.  No issues.  It shouldn't be the only thing you use but it works great for blowing the loose struff out of the lower receiver or for blowing down through th egas tube or barrel.  Be sure to let the surfaces dry and then re-oil them to put oil/lube back on the surface.

Ive been using Mobil 1 for lube about the same leght of time.

yes, just make sure it's the non clorinated stuff.  and make sure you don't over spray to much onto the furniture and especially a nice optic if you run one.

Thanks guys. I was pretty confident that was the case but I wanted to know for sure.

I know how to treat firearms with fine finishes but I am looking for an economical solution for guns that I can use brake cleaner on.

The other can that is chlorinated will be red.

I love Brake Cleaner for cleaning AR's.   Its great for blowing crud out of hard to reach places in the AR.   Like the chamber.

Yep,

I wanted to make sure that people understood that I made an effort and came up short. I have seen too many people berated on other sites before for asking questions that are covered an a sicky or FAQ thread.

There is a lot of information here but the search feature IMO is not good. At the very least I did not get the results that I thought I would.

First, it's a SITE as in a location, not one of our senses.  Second, he's right.  Great sources of info here but the search function does suck.  What he says is true.  AND if he hadn't said he searched you'd probably be shitting on him for that.  Everyone makes their first post and unless you own the SITE I wouldn't take it so personal.

In addition to this question, is non-chlorinated brake cleaner safe to use on Cerakoted finish lowers?

The cheapest starting fluid will work just as well as brake clean, and will not affect ANY plastics. I have used it for 45 years, no problems.

Lighter fluid/starting fluid may indeed do a good job. It is an excellent degreaser. I use it to flush the bearings used in fishing reels and some of them have delicate plastic/rubber seals and it does not cause any harm.

Starting fluid will flush any metal completely free of any oil or other residue as fast as brake clean. I have never found any so called 'Top End Lube' in any starter fluid, so don't worry about that part. However, the cheapest may not have that on the label anyway.

Search function is improved with purchase of a Team Membership.  It's one of the many perks the $2/mo will get you.

Not my first post and I agree, the search function sux.

Criticism is a good thing.  How else will changes occur?  Remember that horrid EE.... thank God we finally got rid of that nightmare.  Well, thank the criticism.

To the OP, welcome to the sight... the answers you seek are here, you just have to overcome the hurdles to find them.

IMO brake cleaner is fine, but probably unneccessary.

I have used brake cleaner for 8-9 years no problem on any stocks or finishes.

I love brake cleaner, I use the stuff from Walmart, works great. It can remove your Dryfilm lube inside the upper and buffer tube if you let it sit on the surface for to long.

Is this safe for Cerakoted surface?

I wouldn't use it on Cerakote.

I know brake cleaner has been used for years and I have used it myself a time or two. But when it comes to lube Motor oil stays in the motor, when it comes to my firearms I use the best lube I can find. In today's market and every lube company claims to be the best, and every member of every gun forum claims to use the best lube. So I reckon I am no different, but Mil-Comm products also has the United States Military that says it's GTG. If their products are good enough for the gatlin type guns on a heli there will be no issues with it keeping my firearms lubed and ready to rock n roll!!!

I have been using it for years, works great. Just be sure that you re-oil all of the gun otherwise it will rust.

One caution about brake cleaners and carb cleaners. They will spot the heck out of eye glasses with plastic lenses and their coatings. I would suspect that they may do the same to scope lens. They spot so fast you can not take them off and wipe them clean before the damage is done.
