Is one necessary? I've just been using a boresnake on my AR but was thinking of getting a Tipton carbon fiber rod, would a AR specific bore guide be good or a universal bore guide? and what length rod 36" or 26"?......16" non chrome lined barrel, or just keep using the boresnake?   Thanks

A bore guide will keep the jag and rod centered in the bore.  Without it you run the risk of causing damage to the bore and to the cleaning rod.  I'm a fan of Bore Tech products.  The legnth of the rod would depend on how long your barrel is and any extra legnth needed for the guide.

Another reason for an AR-15 bore guide is that it keeps dirty solvent out of the action.
When you clean from the chamber, the rod tends to get crud into the receiver.
A good AR type receiver bore guide also has a solvent port that allows you to apply solvent to the brush or patch while it's in the reciever and not get any excess in the action.

When you buy a guide, also order some Accubore pipetts from Brownell's.  These are small plastic bulbs that allow applying solvent without making a mess or contaminating the solvent in the bottle.

I use a bore guide on my high end bolt guns, but a bore guide on an AR IMHO is not needed.
The chamber is alot tougher and you can take the upper off the bottom.
Solvents don't hurt to get in the lower reciever of an AR.

I only use a bore guide on my 24" stainless HBAR.

Crome lined Brls I just use a dewey rod.
