I cleaned it when I first got it. I will go through it again though and give it a super thourough cleaning and if it happens again I will know that isn't the problem. So does the forward assist work when the bolt is all the way back? (Can you use the forward assist throughout the entire travel of the bolt?) Thanks.

No look at the bolt, see the notches in the side? They have to line up with the FA plunger for it to move the bolt forward. |

Instead of playing blind man darts,
You want to bring use up to speed on what type of rifle/parts you have? Until then, it could a maraud of passable problems, such as the buffer retainer binding on the carrier or lost in the receiver extension, a butt stock screw too long and embedded into the buffer bumper, an end coil wind bur of the recoil spring binding, rough carrier bottom and hammer binding, to complete as a problem in the FCG. P.S. Unless you blew a primer and the primer parts are wedged in the action, it’s not a problem related to the ammo. |

I got the thing free'd up and pulled the bolt out. Wasn't real dirty but when I did the FA plunger (the part that makes contact with the bolt) fell out. I'm guessing this is why it was locking up on me. Looks like the pin that holds it in place just fell out. It's a little beat up.
The rifle is a Rock River M4. I built the lower, bought the upper. All RRA parts. |

FA anvil pin, or the roll pin that holds the whole FA in the upper.
If the latter, sounds like someone didn't get the FA indexed correctly (rotation) when driving in the roll pin threw the upper receiver, and caused the problem. When you do install the new retaining roll pin, make sure to hold the FA in/indexed so the roll pin slips past the FA flat, and not off the round edge. When installed correctly, the FA will glide in and out (still will have spring tension, and the anvil will retrack back into channel (beyond flush). www.ar15.com/content/manuals/TM9-1005-319-23.pdf 3-11 E ( 3-54, 3-59) |
