When I pull the charging handle on a new Rock River lower the Bolt Catch does not grab and stay locked ?? No magazine in rifle. I replaced the Bolt Catch Spring and Bolt Catch Plunger with NEW spare parts. Still won't lock the Bolt Catch when Charging Handled is pulled back. The Bolt catch seems to be fine, not damaged. Thanks for any responce. |

No it will not lock back manually. P mags, steel mag and aluminum mags. Tried 5 different mags. Pull back the charging handle as far as it will go back and push on the base of the paddle to engage the catch and ease the BCG forward until it stops. If you cannot retract the BCG far enough into your buffer tube, then you may be using the incorrect buffer, have the tube screwed in too far, obstruction in the tube, or either the tube is too short or buffer is out of spec. ETA: make sure you used the correct spring for the bolt catch plunger. I've seen people mix them up by mistake |

put an EMPTY magazine in the weapon, verify it is locked in place pull the bolt to the rear as for as it will go. look into the ejection port. the bolt catch should be in it's lifted position. The bolt catch and the bolt face should have a space between of 1/4' or larger. The bolt face has to go past the bolt catch for it to catch the bolt on bolt return. If the bolt face can not be pulled past the catch, something is wrong with the bolt travel distance. If the bolt face goes behind the mag. catch, and there is space between the catch and bolt face, and the catch is not in it's correct up position, something is binding the bolt catch. |

Thanks for any responce. Upper shotgun open, insert a new empty USGI mag into mag well and lock the mag in. The follower of the empty mag should push the bolt catch all the way up. If the bolt catch does not fully rise, then pull the mag, and check the bolt catch to confirm that its moving in the receiver slot, just with spring tension pulling it back down. If you feel any binding of the bolt catch in the slot, then lube the catch and work it by hand until if frees up. Now put the empty mag back in, and see if the catch now fully rises. If it does not fully rise up at this point, you need to pull the bolt catch out of the receiver, and double check the install. Start with a drill bit down the spring channel to make sure that there is no debries in the bottom of the channel, spring, buffer, the catch, and instead of using the roll pin, just install a drill bit for now to hold the catch in. New empty mag agains (too weed out if the mag spring is too weak) and retest. If at this point the mag follower will still not rails the bolt catch, then either the spring channel is too shallow, or the spring too long. Springs are cheap, so clips a wind or two off the spring, and retest. Once you have the catch correctly rising, then put the catch back in for good. http://www.ar15.com/content/guides/assembly/lower/ Now that you know that the bolt catch is working correctly, install the upper again, drop in the new USGI mag, and pull the charging handle all the way back, and look into the ejection port. The face of the bolt should clear the bolt catch, and stop about 1/4" in front of the ejection port. If the bolt face will not come back the correct distance, then you have either the wrong buffer, or buffer spring in play. |

I had this happen once, and I found the culprit to be that the screw that goes into the end of the buffer tube from the buttplate on the stock, to be too long. I had to shorten it about about a 1/4" . You can tell if that's the problem by looking at the back of the plunger that's in the buffer tube. If it's hitting, it should show marking on the back end of it.

Its the difference between a A-1 and A-2 butt stock screw since the A-2 uses the receiver extension spacer that is 3/8" longer, requiring the 3/8" longer butt stock screw. |
