What's the difference with the shrouded and non shrouded Bolt Carrier?

the shrouded has the firing pin covered so the hammer cannot get caught up in in and lock the rifle up.

exposed firing pin and not.

What do you mean?

I know what it is and what it looks like, but what is it for?

Design differences, such as those made by Colt (full circle carrier / half circle carrier) were done to make conversion to automatic fire more difficult.

I do not know if this was a similar design change, however it is not really for anything. They both function the same just one has more metal on it. Just think of it as more protection for the firing pin.

think it was a problem with the "j" hook hammer catching the firing pin shoulder and causing a malfunction, broken firing pin, or firing pin retainer.
