I had to cannibalize an AR and when I found parts to put it back together, the BCG would only close about hallway.  Seemed like it was hitting something?  When I would remove the take down pin the BCG would close as the upper/lower receiver would separate.  Decided it was hanging up on the hammer.  So I replaced it and it works fine now.  The hammer causing the problem is shaped like this one.

It looks like it was catching on the indentation on the top of the hammer.  Would it be safe to bevel the edge a little?
One other question, do hammers and triggers have to be used in matching sets?
Thanks

If the hammer is catching the firing pin stop collar, then the FCG or receiver holes are slightly out of spec.  Most of the time, it the distance of the trigger from the pin channel to the front sear that is too short, which does not retain the hammer lower enough.

As for correctly the problem, make sure that  the FP stop collar is flush or slightly below the ramp on the carrier (you can use a drill to spin file the FP collar via the back of the FP).  and yes, you can relieve the top of hammer L edge a touch (just don't lower the top of the hammer contract pad too much) to help resolve the problem as well.
