Hello all,

Im new and I just moved to Nevada.  My neighbor built an AR and had all these fancy lasers and stuff on it.  He said they are cheap to build and he spent like $2000 on it.  Now you have to beable to build an AR a lot cheaper.  So I wanted to build an AR that can do some coyote hunting . I would really like it to reach out around 400-500 yards and be accurate.  Being my first I kinda want to make this somewhat a simpler build until my next one.  So any hints or personal experiences are best.

So far this is what searching this forum before I became a member and researching gun parts, also feel free to add stuff that i forgot or things that i will need.  Also I like OD green and i can't really find anyplace that has OD green stuff

I'm going to get

A spikes tactical  zombie lower w/ standard kit with no stock
A collapsible stock (OD Green) Any kind i guess lol
BCM BFH 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ Troy Standard TRX 11" Handguard
Bushnell elite tactical (3-12 X 44)
Some form of bipod not actually sure how to put bipods on AR's since Im new to this.

Really the lasers and all that crap are "tacticool"!  Build a rifle to do what you want it to do not to invade Poland or something.

A 16" could do everything you just described.  PSA (Palmetto State Armory) has good deals on kits.  Spikes makes excellent quality stuff for inexpensive prices also I prefer Spikes stuff personally because I cannot afford to build 3 Noveske rifles but I can Spikes and Daniel Defense my other fav.

But start with a base rifle kit and start there and add what you need not what looks cool.  Keep it practical and simple I say.

A Stainless Barrel will be a bit more accurate, but the Hammer Forged BCM will certainly do the job. BCM also has 410 Stainless uppers that are very nice and accurate.

I agree with the above poster. All you need is an optic for your purpose (Red dot or Magnified scope) and a sling. Some people like Vertical or angled fore-grips, and a flashlight if you would use it for HD (Im happy with a pistol for HD).
Spend any extra money on ammo and more mags

Magpul has OD green stocks BTW

Thanks guys for all the help, just for the record all that stuff i had on there with the kits and all that jazz that should be enough to build a rifle?  Also Thanks for telling me about Magpul hopefullly you had some stuff from them cause I was reading reviews and people were saying that their dark earth brown and stuff were lighter and darker than what their other stuff was but i guess i might as well buy all Magpul OD green stuff so they all match that would be smart of me

Pretty much all of the Magpul stuff is good to go.  Take the time to visit some of the site sponsor websites.  Most are all lsted at the top and bottom of this screen.  Check out Aim surplus, Spikes Tactical, (you've obviously been to Bravo's website), Palmetto State Armory, and Magpul –– to name a few.

Also, read through this thread .  It has lots of good information about ARs.

OP, read your post again and you will aslo need a bolt carrier group and a charging handle.  Check out this thread for some fast and easy info on some popular BCGs and prices.  Anywhere you can buy a bolt, you can buy a charging handle.  They range from about $10-$40.  Palmetto state armory sells a BCG/CH combo for $110 I think.

Bipods are very easy to install if you have some sort of a rail.  May need a small one piece adapter.  We will burn that bridge when you get to it.

What kind of experience do you have with hand tools? Almost everything on an AR is pinned or threaded on. Lowers can be built with little more than a hammer, a vice grip, and a screwdriver. Uppers involve a little more wrenching and specialized tools. None of it is all that hard, but (and I $#!+ you not) I have worked with people who didn't know which end of a hammer is the one you hit stuff with.

Don't blow your money on the coolest looking rifle you can build. Start simple, learn your rifle, and add to it as you see fit.

Start simple for sure !

Welcome to NV.....come check out our Hometown Forum.  We have build parties all the time.  If your in the Northern part of the state, we have one coming up Jan 14 in Reno.

i feel like if you want a long range shooter, you might do better with a longer barrel...  i would go with at least an 18"er  w/SS barrel..!!!  as for the stock i would recomend going with somethig from the magpul line up, the CTR  is a good sturdy stock...! but the ACS gives you a good check rest for those long shots... and then there is always the Big Daddy..  Magpul PRS Sniper Stock...

the longer barrel will give you more velocity and that should give you more distance...   the standard 20"er is choice... but if your wanting to get some kill shots out to 500yrds then the more velocity you get out of your rifle the better your chances are making those long range kill shots...  a 16"er can get you out that far, but realistically i wouldn't want to attempt a kill shot past 300yds... thats just my opinion.....

combination of parts is almost infinite, easy to get "lead astray" and buy hardware for the coolness factor, instead of what you really need. I would take up on the offer to go to the "BUILD party" (before you start buying stuff), and actually see/touch/handle as many actual configurations possible. I can pretty much guarantee you will change your mind about stuff you thought you "needed". Good luck, enjoy, shoot often, and if there aren't pics, it didn't happen...

Well a longer barrel is needed i guess, I hit a snag due to my fiance needs to get her wisdom teeth out lol. But ill get pictures up when ever i manage to get all the stuff sent to me  Thanks for all the help guys.  Also I seen on barrels they talk about 1/7 twist and that stuff does that have a factor in longer shooting distances??

I'm building mine now. If I did it all over again and wanted to control costs (its easy to opt for upgrades) and avoid bad parts choices (or losing springs) here is the route I'd take

Quality name, decent parts, mags, case.
Just add a scope and Bipod

I'm sure these guys can find flaws but as a noob this looked pretty great to me
