I'm thinking of puting together a rifle while I'm between projects. I have a colt lower with a factory NM trigger and i was thinking of using a flatop factory chrome 20" upper and a 9x or 10x scope. Do you think it's possible to get MOA out to 500 yds with M855 ammo ?

I dont think M855 is MOA ammo out of any barrel at that range.  Certainly not with a factory barrel.

Since this is.....I hate to use this term "beater" rifle I was hoping to come close to MOA out to 500yds without using match grade ammo.

With this combo I'd be happy hitting a 12" shoot n see

Just my observation most people cant do their part to consistentently shoot moa at 500 yrds let alone without the help of match ammo and a good barrel. I'm not saying you cant I'm just saying it's not easily acomplished.

I can hit a B-27 target with iron sights 80% to 90% of the time. Depends on coffee intake.

I see you edited that to a 12"  target that I beleive is doable. I wasn't trying to insult you I shoot a lot and I thought you meant 1" at 500 and I know i cant achive that with any of my 223's not to say that others cant.

MOA at 500 yards is 5" group, not 1" group. Still something WAY beyond MY capabilities.

A 1" group at 500 yards would be 0.2 MOA.
