I have an interest in an inexpensive scope to mount to the top of my A2 carry handle.  Has anyone had any luck good or bad with say an NCstar or barska scope that mounts directly without an adapter?  My sights a fine, but magnification is great.  I just don't want the scope sitting 10 inches from the top of my receiver with a mount on it.  And I also am not in the market for a multi-hundred dollar scope...I know those are awesome.

Scopes are not like tires where they all roll the same, but some are less durable than others.

While durability is an important quality ... quality scopes are also clearer, less distorted (especially around the edges), have repeatable adjustments, less-no chance of fogging, reticles that don't pop off, etc… Every aspect of a scope is much lower in quality and performance with dirt cheap scopes. I have 2 NcStars and learned the hard way.

No you don’t need to spend a fortune on a decent scope, but I would stay away from the NcStars. Hopefully others can recommend some decent scopes that are reasonably priced based on their experience with them.

If you can find an out of production Hakko 4x21, they are worth the search. Good quality. The best would be to find a Colt marked scope, but they run a bit more than the Hakko's which are in the 100-130 range new.

I ended up ordering a Barska 4x20 that mounts directly to the carry handle.  It was more than the NCstar but not nearly as much a vintage COLT model.  The patent has been up on the COLT model for ever and a day so there are plenty of reproduction models of different quality.  I will get it in a week or so and will have a range report that weekend.
