The winter around here has drug on a little too long already - I have a spare upper and lower downstairs that I must build into something! So far as ARs I have a pair so far:
-M4gery -.223 Wylde 24" bull barrel I built up Now it is time for something new and different. I have family all over Texas and have got the hog hunting bug. Every free minute I have down is spent chasing pigs and the .223s are a little light for that. I have shot the BILs 6.8 some and it seems like a nice gun. It unfortunately does not satisfy my need for more power and something that nobody else has. I have been doing lots of online research the last week, and I really like the looks of the 30RAR. It seems like a good mix of bullet weight and speed. More energy that a 6.8 with flatter trajectory than .450 Bushmaster. The only problem is no uppers, no parts, and no brass. A few places will tell you that .30RAR uses .284 Winchester / .450 Bushmaster as a parent case, but I found where that is not true if you look closer. The rim diameter on the 30RAR was made a little larger by Remington so it would not fit in a .450 Bushmaster. So my wandering thoughts are leading me to this: Could you assemble a rifle on a wildcat cartridge that uses .450 Bushmaster brass necked down to .308? The performance would match the 30RAR but brass would be a little easier to come by? For parts I would use a standard lower and upper with a .450 Bushmaster bolt. Then get an 18" 30 cal barrel rechambered to 30RAR and have the feed ramps modified. The dies would be pretty easy: use a set of 30RAR dies with a shellholder for .450 Bushmaster. Am I missing something here? The build seems fairly easily and gets around the proprietary 30RAR rim diameter while keeping the same level of performance. Would I expect to have thrust issues with the .450 Bushmaster bolt and the necked-down cartridge opposed to a regular .450 Bushmaster cartridge? I noticed Remington is using a AR10 pattern bolt face, so maybe that is needed to handle the thrust? The only other proposal would be wait and see IF Remington produces any more 30RAR guns/uppers in the near future. The ammo availability seems to point to this, but I am short on patience. |

The 30RAR was in fact derived from the 284Win and 450B brass "with" the addition of the larger rim dia so the 450B bolt wasn't used with the 30RAR as it is designed for a lower pressure round and will not survive use with the 30RAR. It is also a different upper than GI because it is a AR15 size but with an enlarged ejection port, uses a barrel with a AR10 barrel extension and has a modified AR15 BCG to house the modified 308 bolt.
