This is my attempt at getting an EOTech FAQ started.

To better explain the EOTech is to understand the model designations.
EOTech makes the 500, 510 and the 550 series holographic sights. Those model numbers denotes the option and capability of each model.

Production deciphered:
500 series civilian models includes
502.A65(A65 denotes the 65MOA circle dot reticle)
no protective hood(can't be retrofitted)
basic electronics
N cell batteries
This is the same model as the Bushnell Holosights that is produced under the same roof at EOTech's Ann Arbor Facility.

510 series law enforcement models includes
511.A65
511.D1(This is the only model that offers a 1 MOA reticle.)
512.A65(AA batteries)
All 510 series model are manufactured with rubberized button starting May 2004, it is only available with the current Rev F
Protective hood
Upgraded electronics from the 502
Dive rate 33ft

550 series military models includes
551.A65
552.A65
NV compatible
Dive Rate to 33ft, 66ft rating available at special request.
550 series started using the rubberized buttons in 2003 starting with the Rev E

EOTech comes standard with the 3D reticle, the 3D reticle has a 65MOA outer circle with hash mark at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock position, and a 1 MOA dot in the center.

This concept ensure a ultra fast target acquisition time during CQB engagements, and a fine 1 MOA dot for long distance shot out to 250+ yards.
With the EOTech or any other red dot optics, I always recommend zero the unit in at 50 yards which will give a 2-3 inch difference from muzzle out to 250 yards.

Available mount for EOTech

Flat top---------LaRue SpeedLever Mount

ARMS #54 LR1 hi-rise Mount for heads up CQB stance.  seem to work well with the ARMS SIR or #38 SWAM sleeve but the see thru co-witness hole on the mount is too low if the mount is mounted to the flat top.

Carrying Handle----------Precision Reflex Hi-ride Mount for M4 handguards and lo-ride or hi-ride for standard CAR handguard.

Carrying Handle--------Bennie Cooley BC CAM adjustable height mount.

Co-Witness possibilities:
Mounting directly to the flattop with the provided thumb screw, you can use basically any BUIS on the market.  This will put the iron in the center of the optic window.  This is an excellent location for the sole propose of give you a nice big ghost ring if the electronics failed.

ARMS makes a raiser mount that put the EOTech up high for operator that needs the optic to clear the gas mask or the operator like to shoot from a chest mount head up position.

Mounting via the new LaRue EOTech mount will effective raise your EOTech optic window and put your iron at the lower 1/3 of the optic window.  This will make the iron less obtrusive and you can still just use the window to make shot if the electronics fails.  (LaRue mount is the best way to mount your EOTech to the flattop in my opinion)

Mounting to Carrying handle has two maybe three options
Precision Reflex offers two forward gooseneck mounts, hi-ride mount that will work with M4 or CAR handguards and the standard that will work only with CAR handguards.
Bennie Cooley makes a height adjustable forward gooseneck mount that can be adjusted to fit your handguard height vs. your EOTech height vs. your iron sight.  this is a very versatile mount and although it is adjustable, the mount is actually very robust.

Starting 2005, all new Rev F has the following upgrades

Battery life increases by 2X
Through and extensive and expensive research and development effort, EOTech has doubled the battery life compared to previously published EOTech statistics. For example, at setting 12 the battery run time increased from 314 hours to 633 hours, Lithium battery run time increased from 500 hours to 1000 hours.!!! The gain is even more substantial at the brighter settings, where battery life is most critical. Available NOW!!

2X Brighter
EOTech has enhanced the electronic circuitry to allow the brightness adjustment range to expand by a factor of 10 times. Now the reticle is 2X brighter at the highest setting. This completely eliminates any concerns over washout in desert or artic conditions. Also with the new improvements the engineer has found the reticle is sharper compare to the older Rev E. Available NOW!!

New Switches on Model 511/512
Model 550, the model 510 will now be upgraded with the latest membrane switch design, providing users with a greater tactile feel and positive snap feeling upon depression of the switches. Raised inlays around the switches provide a clear separation between brightness controls to ensure correct actuation of the operating switches.

What is the factory recommended zero distance for:
5.56mm systems
9mm carbines/SMGs
40mm DefTech launchers
40mm Sage launchers
FN LL Launchers
FN P90
M14/G3 (and other miscellaneous .308 systems)

This has come up (again) as we are about to field the EOTechs as a general-issue optic for the 5.56mm carbines that are replacing shotguns at my agency. We have been using them for the last few years in special units, and they have been a big hit. We initially used the 25-yard zero out of sheer ignorance (25-yard zero was recommended for 9mm subguns). When we realized that our new 5.56mm systems had some pretty odd holdovers once you got out to longer ranges, we researched it further and grudgingly got everyone to move to the 100-yard zero, with a 2" holdover at CQB ranges, which is easy with the 65 MOA reticle. There is actually a state agency that is using a 7-yard zero with EOTechs on 5.56mm systems, because they feel that rapid hostage-rescue type shots are there biggest responsibility, though they haven't setermined their holdover (or hold under) for extended ranges.

While I was thinking on the matter, it seemed to me that a 65 MOA bull's eye target for 50 and 100 yards would be the quickest way to zero an EOTech at either of those ranges. I suck at math. Anyone have any ideas on how big those bull's eyes would need to be?

natez,

I recommand 50yards for the carbine and 25yards for the SMG as those the factory.

I will find out the distance for everything else.

MOA is close enough to 1" per 100 yds.  It's linear.  So 65 MOA spans 65" at 100 yds (about the height of an adult person, 5 ft 5 inches); 32.5" at 50 yds; 16.25" at 25 yds; 8.125" at 12 yds.

I don't see much value in using the outer ring beyond 100 yds except to use as a crude rangefinder.  Since 65 MOA equates to 5' 5" inches, if a standing person/silhouette spans half the reticule, you know they're out about 200 yds.  If they spans 1/3 of the reticule, it's about 300 yds, and so on and so on.

My thoughts were that a 65 MOA bull at 50/100 yards would make for a quicker and simpler zero than the outline targets we typically use. line the outer ring up with the bull, and fire three shot strings and adjust until you are hitting the center. With decent binos, a spotter/coach can see .223 holes at the 50, and quickly walk the shooter on target.

We have been using 100 because the holdover is 2" at CQB, 1" (pretty much POA) at 50, and 2" low at 200, again pretty much POA.

Which model #s or revision letter indicate if the scope is the newer 2X brightness, or the older revision?  For example, would model 512.A65 be the older or newer type?

It would be the following model with a RevF stamping on the side of the protective hood.
511
512
551
552
Example

Notice the letter F printed on the lower bottom right hand side of the hood.

Parallex free claim is only if you keep the reticle inside the optic window.  Aimpoint don't have this problem because if you cant the sight so much as the dot move pass the optic window, you will have nothing.  Since EOTech have a lrager reticel pattern, you end up pushing the reticle pass the limit of the glass while shooting from some very strange positions.

GREAT JOB.

YOU HAVE NOT TOTALLY CONVERTED ME, AS I STILL RUN AIMPOINTS ON MY 10.5", 14.5" AND SIMUNITIONS KIT.

HOWEVER, ON MY DEDICATED "MID-SOUTH RIFLE METAL MANIA" DEDICATED UPPER (LMT RIFLE LENGTH MRP WITH 16" SS BARREL AND MSTN QC BRAKE), I AM NOW RUNNING AN EOTHING. I NEED THE 1 MOA DOT FOR THE 6" PLATES AT 150 YARDS.

ALSO, CONTRACTOR CUSTOMERS ARE REQUESTING EOTECHS JUST TOO OFTEN FOR ME TO IGNORE.

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE THAT THE LARUE TACTICAL EOTHING MOUNT IS THE TICKET ON A FLAT TOP WITH A FIXED FRONT SIGHT.

Chen, a couple of questions:
-Is EOTech a totally USA operation?  design, manufacture, etc.
-What is the lowest possible mount available for an EOTech or AimPoint?  Is the EOTech mounted directly on a rail lower than any possible Aimpoint setup(looking for a low mount dot sight for a Benelli M4)

EOTech will only co-witness with LaRue mount or the very high ARMS mount.   anyother mount will just raise the EOTech and block your view through your iron.

With Aimpoint, you are require to purchase a mount.  with EOTech, you can mount it directly to your flattop.

Dan,

EOTech is fully owned by Americans, located in Ann Arbor Michigan.

For a Benelli S-90, i mount an EOTech to the rail.  It allows for a more heads up shooting stnaces that works great for a tool like the shotgun.

As far as the lowest possible mount, Aimpoint with the standard X-wide ring, you will have a better cheek weld.

EOTech can be mounted directly to your rail but with the lower housing, it riase the optic window height compare to the Aimpoint with X-wide ring.

I think Chen might have mis-spoke a little :

The EOTech will co-witness without any sort of mount needed. You can slap it directly on a flattop and still see your iron sights. The LaRue mount will elevate the EOTech so that less of the front sight is seen through the EOTech window, giving you a larger field of view.

This is a big plus for the EOTech in terms of cost - the Aimpoint will always require a seperate mount to cowitness correctly on a flattop reciever.

Doc is correct.

EOTech has a build in mount that can be mount directly to the flattop.

Excellent info, Chen.  Thanks!

Could you possibly explain what the significant differences are between the Bushnell 52-0021 and the EOTech 512.A65?  I am aware of the protective hood and the rubber faceplate, is that it?   I can get the Bushnell for about $100 less than the 512.  I am trying to justify that additional $100 cost.  A protective hood and rubber faceplate just doesn't cut it for that price in my book.  Are there significant differences in the electronics?  Any light you could shed on this Chen would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on a tight budget, but I want to get a good optic, also.

Front night sight will not effect the sight during day or night. you foucs on the target not the front sight, night sight never came into play visually.

Bushnell is made by EOTech at thier Ann Arbor factory.

Bushnell Holosight don't have the dive rate of the 512, nor does it have the protective hood and rubberized buttons.  The 511/512 will also have a more upgraded electronis.  for range shooting or general plinking, the Bushnell will sever you just fine.

hope this helps.

Only mount that will work for the EOTech on the flat top is the LaRue mount.  The #38 is too high for proper co-witness.

The EOTech WILL co-witness with your sights almost perfectly on a flattop.  I've recently gotten a 511.A65F and they actually state in the instructions NOT to play with the adjustment screws until you've fired a few test rounds.  they claim it will be almost right-on out of the box.  I slapped mine on and sure enough, that 1MOA dot was right on my front sight post.  If you add a mount like the LaRue, it keeps the FSP down in the lower 1/3 of your window.  I happen to like mine exactly where it is- right ON the tip of the post.

All I can say about the tritium front sights is that the ones I've seen have a stripe of tritium that does NOT extend all the way up to the tip.  What great effect that would have on co-witnessing is beyond me.

I do not plan on buying a mount for my 511 unless i start to get the itch to change it from the receiver to the front handguards and back and forth.  If I decide to get the magnifier when it comes out, i'll definately get the LaRue.

The parallax issue- EOTech is correct in saying it's 99% parallax free.  You won't notice a  problem with parallax unless you go hunting for it.  Once you find a little parallax, you'll realize you won't be using the optic at such an outrageous angle and won't be hiding all but the very edge of the ring.   You have to look through the sight correctly in order to see the ring in the first place.

As far as the bushnell- you'll have the $100 lying around one day and wish you'd spent it on an EOTech, most likely.

I would get the model that takes N batteries- I'm happy that I don't have a sight that looks like a clown shoe in profile.  it just looks like a stubby hiking boot

one other thing- what's up with the very top edge of the glass looking like it's f'ed up?  i really thought mine was splitting from some kind of film or something.  That must be some type of sealant or glue up agains the edge of the thick glass that makes it look like a coke bottle with a crack in it!?!?!

Next question,  best place to get one...........

Why, from one of the many supportive dealers of ARFCOM! Where else? :)

Seriously though, there are lots of good deals to be had on new units from the dealers here. Occasionally used ones will pop up as well. I have ... 4 now, and all but one have come from used sales. Chen hooked me up with my 552. :)

So the 512.A65F I just bought IS IN FACT water resistant to 33 feet? I don't plan to submerge it, but as long as it will hold up to rain and the like, and maybe a heavy splash or two, it'll be fine, correct?

Yes, you'll be just fine.

Excellent! I can't wait!

SMG Lee,

Do you have any "down" EOTech drills similar to the ones Lumpy has done?  If so could you elaborate?

I just recently acquired a Rev F version. I think it is the 511? (The oen with the N cell Batteries. I have played with it around the house a few times. Just a few minutes ago I pulled it out to get ready to sight it in, in the morning. I noticed that it looked as if there were two 65 MOA rings visible, and two center dots visible! I thought maybe my eyes were tired, so I had my daughter look through it and she saw Two circles and two dots as well! Any one ever heard of this? How is EoTechs Customer Service?
Thanks,
Sean

I've read that EOTech will co-wittness with the new ARMS 50SC Bi-level SIR System.  It looks like it's already being done.  Check out the pic I found in another forum.  Has anyone elese mounted an EOTech on a #50SC?
