mongo001: First off, very nice work, looks great! I've been thinking it would be VERY COOL to have quick change muzzle devices that do not add to the overall length of the firearm. I envision a small device that screws onto the threads and sits flush (or close to) with the end of the barrel. It would have a couple tabs on it where the muzzle devices would lock onto/into. Something similar to the way sound suppressors QD to/from muzzle devices. Then a line of QD muzzle devices (muzzle break w/ no downward facing ports, best possible flash hider, flash hider with no downward facing ports, etc.) would be made to fit onto it. This would allow quick changing to muzzle breaks for broad daylight & competitions, flash hiders for night, etc. Don't know if it would be something you're interested in, just thought I'd throw out an idea if you're looking for other things to try. I don't think such a thing exists for the AR yet. Could be a potential big money maker, IMO. |

Mongo, you are the man. Very nice work. Sorry if this is stupid question but I´m total newbie in this. Do you mind if I ask what is solution of parkerizing? I mean what liquids and stuff are mixed together and how? I´m planning to start my own parkerizing because that would be much more cheaper, than using Sako´s services here in Finland... MN |

Cool! Since you added the correct OPS INC thread pitch, you need to send a serious cover your ass letter with each one sold. If by some SLIM chance someone actually screws an OPS INC can onto one of those, it wont be pretty. Make sure the buyers know the real OPS brake/collar sets are installed a special way so the collar is in the right position to stop the can from being screwed on too far, or not far enough. If it isnt screwed on properly there will be problems. I suggest some extensive testing of the modified OPS 4 Port brake. There isnt much meat holding the internal baffle in place and you dont want that blowing off. |
But you're right, these are just pretty muzzle ornaments, so play at your own risk. The center one, that looks like a flash hider was used with a can, from the info I got from the creator, with no negative results. I'll say it here once again and include a blurb with each. These are ornamental. They aren't made to the exact tolerances that are needed for proper suppressor operation, so play at your own risk. |
|
All about making your directions idiot proof and covering your ass. The bitch about the collars is whether they are copies or not, the real ones are installed so they mount at a determined location in relation to the brake. Trust me there are idiots out there who wont pay attention, and will try to pound that round peg into the square hole. Remember my brakes(I like to call them muzzle weights) are also purely decoration, and you dont know the grief I have received over them.... I'm just looking out for you "little" buddy I have seen your work, and its top notch, just cover your ass. You cant post here enough that these are just for looks! |
Thanks, I appreciate it. Another issue with the true collars is that they have to be perfectly concentric with the bore, or else you risk hitting the suppressor internals with a bullet. I'm just turning them out to fit the OD of the barrel - exact concentricity isn't a real concern, as long as it looks good. |

Hey Mongo I have an idea for you. I recently pickup up a couple of old 3 prong style flash suppressors. I have to say, I like the tapered look of them. Maybe you could try tapering a vortex to a similar (maybe a little longer) profile? Would be unique. I have a couple of old-style vortex/vortex clone units that have the lock ring slot at the end that catches on everything that I'd love to have streamlined a bit. |
There is one thing that would make me very hesitant to play with the Vortex FH in the way you described, especially an older model. Some of the early Vortex FHs experience problems with the tines spreading due to the heat. If you were to thin the tines too much, they may lose their rigidity and do the same. I'd be more than willing to make one for you and you could be my test case.
|
I've shot with multiple style Vortex FHs and have never heard the tuning fork noise. Maybe I'm tone deaf. I've been told I can't sing either.
|
|
I would think that a tapered design should have less "tuning fork" ringing than the standard parallel vortex design. After all, look at a tuning fork... straight, parallel metal prongs... I'd be happy to be your test customer Mongo, but I probably wouldn't be able to really torture test it very well. No FA available. ETA: I've never noticed a ringing myself. Of course on an AR with the spring noise from the stock I doubt I would. Maybe on a bolt gun or something. |
Adding: A .308/6.8 SPC version of the modified Vortex may be available in the near future. This will look very similiar to the 5.56 version, except it will have 5/8" X 24 TPI threads and a .308 compatible bore. If Nick doesn't mind, I'll post pics of the finished product. No offense, Nick, but I'll probably post pics anyway.

Depending on my next house and pole barn [crossing fingers |
My first choice would be a beautiful deer head, but sadly, it's taken. Then I was thinking of a menacing snake - taken. Then thoughts of a majestic prancing pony popped into my head ![]() How about a charging bear? Taken. A sleek black panther? Taken. A leaping lion? Taken. Whatever the hell is on Oly's receivers???? Taken.![]() I'd probably go with a plain receiver with just a serial number, all of which would start with "MONGO". BUT the likelyhood of me getting a manufacturing FFL in the PRM - less than zero. |

Making progress on the 6.8SPC/.308 Vortex SPRish brake/FH setup. It needs a few more things done and I'm in discussion with the future owner on which direction he wants it to go. It should turn out pretty good. On the left is an unmodified 5.56 Vortex G6, the middle is the modified .308 Vortex with 5/8 X 24 TPI base (minus some machining that still needs to be done) and on the right is the thread protector from a 5.56 setup.

Machining is done and tomorrow or Friday, I could be KGing the parts. It turned out pretty good, for not having a model to work from. I may have changed a few things along the way, but I'm happy with how it turned out. Nick is the only person to own one of these as this is my first. Hell, I haven't even made one for my future 6.8 SPC build. 6.8SPC/.308 on the left, unmodified Vortex G6 in the middle and an SPR modified G6 on the right. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
If you are seriously interested, contact me via email/IM. I am not marketing/mass producing these, but I can make one for anybody interested. There is a small fee for my materials and machining, but it is nothing compared to what some shops charge for custom machining. It is, after all, just a unique muzzle device, nothing more. It has no practical application. I make them for "the thrill of machining". If you are not a machinist, you probably wouldn't understand.

Mongo- I believe it more than you'd think. I'd be doing the same damn thing if I had the machine, the talent and the materials. the best i can do is draw the living hell out of everything i think off using CAD but I can't materialize any of it- defiinitely not in metals... All I have is a drill press, 8" or so I think. oh, and a dremel... IM inbound |
