What's up with this crimping? It's Winchester ZQ3314. Maybe 5% of the rounds are crimped like this. Looks like they were done by a little pair of pliers or something. Just never seen this on factory ammo. Can I expect split case necks with this? Photos were the best I could do, sorry about the quality...

Lee factory crimp looks nothing like that. The lee makes a solid crimp all the way around the mouth of the case. I forget what type of crimp that is but I'm pretty sure it won't split the case mouths when you shoot them.

Why would a box, multiple boxes, of Winchester loaded ammo from the same lot exhibit this? Most of the rounds have a usual looking crimp. But again, ~5% have this odd thing. I realize these are seconds, or rejects. Maybe the crimp is why they were rejected?

I don't know what kind of crimp that is called, but I've seen plenty of ammo crimped like that. Shoot it.

It is a crimp made with a collet rather than a tapered die. The Lee Factory Crimp Die does that, as do many factory dies.

Looks just like the crimp my Lee die produces. I'm not getting split necks yet.

I've loaded many Winchester cases with crimp like that, with no spilt necks yet. Don't sweat it.
All of my current batch of Q3131 looks like that. |

The case of IMI855 I received last week has this crimp as well.

I've crimped thousands of rounds with my Lee and it looks nothing like that if your putting the right amount of crimp. If you crimp it too much it does leave marks deep into the brass. However when you do this it also cuts into your bullet and dimples it also. That's not good for accuracy and way too much crimp. If you do it right it will show a solid line around the top of the case mouth.
now I've seen many of these winchestor brass crimped like this and while it won't hurt anything to shoot it, it isn't good for accuracy and IMO is a mistake from the factory. They have added too much crimp to these rounds. |

That is typical on a lot of ammunition. 30-30 comes to mind.

I had a similar looking crimp on some Yugo surplus 7.62x54. IIRC, it was 1999. The same stuff, from 1989, had a normal looking crimp.

Got me to thinking, what other Winchester ammo do I have? Is it crimped the same? So I opened a couple boxes of white box .223, USA223R1, and those are all crimped in this manner. Looked at the few boxes of Ranger .223 RA223R2 I have and found the same. Though much less pronounced on both of those loads than the rounds of ZQ3314. So I suppose this is just how Win. crimps their rifle ammo? I've actually never owned any other Win ammo other than .22LR and very old WW 38-40. Well, and tons of 12 and 20 gauge.
eta: Okay, plus the ~10 boxes each of 9mm and .45 Black Talon I bought when it was the shit!.. lol Had to have it! |
