Never seen anything in writing the Technical Manuals, Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB) or Technical Repair Standard (TRS) all of the Mk18 Mod 0s had the standard FSB.

CD - Thank you for your contributions here and in other threads.

Thank you for showing the pictures of the barrels. I wasn’t previously sure if the Colt barrels made it to the gov with front sight bases and drilled taper pins or blank.

Do you drill the set screw holes or do they come that way from Colt?

Are the gas blocks installed just with the set screws, or does any pinning take place by you?

Also, is there any gun bluing or surface treatment put on the bare metal from the old taper pin holes?

My 10.3” Colt build with a G rail. Cold bluing on the bare metal surfaces. Set screw dimples and pin hole drilled using BRD Engineering jigs:

Crane cuts and dimples the Colt barrels, which get sent to CD. And the blocks are just set screwed. (He may use loctite or rocksett on the set screws, I forget) but I do know he does not pin the blocks.

Lets back up a second.  On Mk18 Mod 0, standard FSB is left in place and barrel is cut back and rethreaded by Crane.

On the Mk18 Mod 1/URG- Crane cuts back Colt Govt Profile barrels, removes the FSB, dimples the barrels for the set screws for the gas block, gas port opened to .070.  Gas blocks are installed, set screws torqued in (Loctite on screws), Rocksett on FH and torqued to 25 in lbs.  Taper pin slots are left in the white/ie no refinishing.   Just recently just started getting in factory FN SOCOM 10.3" to same standards as crane (gas port dia, dimples, 1/2x28 threads)  There are no taper pin slots.

Bit more on gas block set screws.  Once aligned, tighten set screws hand tight, back out and add one drop of Locktite 242 (not needed if set screws have locktite on them).  Then torque set screws to 25 in lbs.  Barrel nut is torqued to 50 in lbs to upper receiver, apply molybdenum disulfide grease to upper receiver threads.

Here's one cut down Crane and FN SOCOM 10.3"s

Any way I can get mine cleaned up a bit? I think the guy who etched mine was a little drunk.

In other news:

And its not pictured, but I just got the Geissele trigger in the mail yesterday, and I have a KAC front sight in the mail. I'll probably order a KAC rear and a TD grip soon, and then I think the upper is done. Then I can work on making my lower game not suck so much, lol.

Is the QD TD foregrip clone correct? I hear the regular ones are hard as hell to get on.

Great information and detail. Thanks.

Prior to the FN barrels, had you come across any of the Colt factory 10.3” barrels with proper gas port dia. (Not cut down by Crane)? Not that you know what goes on at Colt, but I’m just curious if those made it into any MK18s that you have seen.

It looks like from the cut down in your picture above, the threads are also left in the “white” with no finish or treatment (clearly a cutdown), whereas my factory Colt 10.3” has finish on the threads.

ETA: Do you generally see H1 or H2 buffers used in these?

Lastly, and I realize this likely isn’t the right thread for the question, but any idea if the URGII will include Geissele gas blocks with their MK16 rails, or if they will remain as-is on the mil guns (not Geissele’s commercial URGII offering)?

Answered in another thread:
Offically only word I have is I've got work to do assembling. Talked to Bill G and was told assembled barrels with gas block and G barrel nut. Remove old barrel, install new barrel, tighten nut (one wrench per 10 rails) and then screw on new rail with T30 screws. Same S4P. Only word on gas blocks I've seen was G stating it was DD Mk12 GBs. Don't know yet until I actually get the kits.

Oh, yes!

I gave up on finding that 4 prong unicorn for a decent price. I wish SF would just make it available commercially.

I wonder if it has the same tuning fork “ping” effect as the 3 prong when the bolt slams home...?

The ping is actually worse lol. I've owned a couple B.E.M. 249F's (most ping) this is my 3rd SF4P (second most ping) and the SF3P brings up the rear with the least ping of the 3.

I think the horizontal cuts inside of the 249F tines is what makes it worse. But if there's one thing I've learned, its embrace the ping mofo!

Slightly off topic but KAC 3 prong has no detectable ping.

Very nice! I think for this upper I want to go with the KAC M4QD muzzle device or just stick with this A2 I have for now. I like the idea of short as possible so I might even throw a KAC MD on my block 2 CQBR. But that would mean I need to figure out what I'm gonna do with this SF4P now.

Same with Dead Air. The tines are all slightly different to mitigate the ping.

i've been torn between going nt4/KAC corncob and sf4p/RC2, the excessive ping may be a big factor in deciding that (who am i kidding, a year from now i'll still be trying to decide which can to go with )

I look at it like this.

KAC pros- flash hider and gun OAL is shorter unsupressed, and the corncob can is THE iconic USSO suppressor

Surefire- more effective flash hider, and more effective can (higher DB reduction)

I would go with KAC all day personally. But the Surefire combo is a better performer

do you have any references/links in regards to the DB performance between the two cans? curious how close or far apart they are, if its a minor difference i'd lean towards KAC just because its uber cool, but if the SF is through and through a better can then that would seal the deal (for me at least)

I'll tell you that Surefire is not known for quiet cans. Neither provides performance to write home about but we are talking about suppressing 10.3" 5.56 which is a challenge in itself.

I'm having trouble finding it but I did find this. Ill see if I can find one for KAC too

http://www.surefire.com/suppressor-comparison-chart

ETA silencer shop claims the NT4 has a 28dB reduction. Which doesn't directly compare to Surefires chart as that's remaining dB levels after suppression. Will keep digging.

I don't mind a little ping, but when you set the gun down a little too hard and it rings that's a bit excessive.

Stay away from the AAC Blackout. A stiff wind and that thing will ping.

Lol that's how my 14.5 with 249F was.

Attach sling (HK hook)- PIIIIING
Set gun down stock first- PIIIIING
Hit bolt release- PIIIIIINGGGG
Charge a round into the chamber- PIIIIIIIIIIIIING-A-RIIIIIIIING-A-DIIIIIIING-A-RINGADIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGG

Ill shut up now.

Would a SF4P be completely wrong on a mod 0? Does anyone have a pic with one?

Most that run a Mk18 Mod 0 in the service usually don't have a suppressor.  Haven't seen one but if I had a unit that had the RC suppressors the SF4P would be put on.

ETA2: Picture
Colt MK18 Mod 0.5 not clone correct (KAC micro, PRI combat latch, Surefire 3 prong, RC2 can), else correct.

See if I answers these in right order
1.  All of the 10.3" I've seen where Colt bbls ALL cut down by Crane.  Haven't seen or identified any Factory Colt 10.3" for Mk18 Mod 1s/URGs.  Haven't rebarreled any Mk18 Mod 0s as we aren't currently using them so can speak for those barrels.
2.  Yes, Crane leaves the threads unfinished.  FN SOCOM threads are fininshed, it comes with a rubber cap on it.
3.  H2 are issued with standard M4A1 carbines and Mk18 Mod 1/URGs.  Again on the Mk18 Mod 0s can't say as I haven't seen any in couple years now.
4.  Nice toys

I know these have been posted before but a nice video from our own ECP with trigger time behind both units.

Also both of these guys are pretty stout.

NT4 has maybe 2K rounds through it. So the difference in ammo is about ~18K or so. Most of that ammo is XM193/XM855.

I've got one of the NT4 prototype mounts that I've been saving for a project. Maybe it'll stay in the box.

Just out of curiosity, what would a used SF4P go for in the condition of yours in the photo? I have 2 I think I'm going to let go of, since I got the closed tine flash hiders recently and like them better. (Hate the ping)

I guess I could just look at the up front costs as an investment in being covered for lowers... basically from now on, lol. Thanks for the info. Assuming it was a good experience, you mind posting or PM'ing me the engraver you used? Did you just provide images for the roll mark and other details?

Since it’s an 80% and you are getting it custom engraved with the markings if it ever gives you problems you could just make another and use the same stamp.

I haven't stayed much up to date on SF4P prices at all, for probably over a year and a half. You're probably better off asking StevieJ or Roadblock that one

I have a RC2 in tan on the way that was purchased before this mod 0. I was hoping it would be close enough. Better than my KAC QDC can I guess. The rest of the gun is correct but the RC2 will not be. Is that going to be acceptable or do I really need to buy a regular RC?!

Got a new to me m961 with the hard to find tailcap for my mod0ish build. Pretty happy with the outcome of this clone. I should've jumped when I had the chance to get a Wilcox m2 mount from brownell's when they were last in stock but my funds were tight from all the other crap I was chasing down. There's always next time. Prob won't shoot it much in this config. That light is a monster. I need another 10.3" barrel so I don't have to swap around accessories from mod0 to b1/1.5. There is soo much purple showing on the m4 in that lighting.

M4 upper came with a raised C forge mark.

M4 upper bbl dated 2004, and ras dated 2003.

I have a DD MK18 Upper from Brownell’s with an inspection date of 3.24.17.  Anyone know when they started doing the .070 port size on these?  Am I good to go?
