Saiga is pronounced ( see' ka )  It is the name of a species of deer that live along the Russian/Chinese border.  I believe they are smaller than our white-tail.  I have a book called Big Game of the World that mentions them.  It is spelled Seka, but I know that is incorrect, they just spelled it how it sounds...

How do you pronounce VEPR? 'veper' ?

Back in the late 1990's when I called Robarms to order the correct scope for my early import VEPR a guy with a thick Russian accent told me "Vep-ERR".

Have you seen the "see'ka" pronunciation of Saiga listed anywhere else besides the "Big Game of the World" book?  

The reason I ask is that in the past I've looked up Saiga in two different unabridged English language dictionaries and found 2 different pronunciations.

The Webster's Unabridged Dictionary had the pronunciation as sounding like "say'ga" (with a long a).  

I don't have the name of the other dictionary handy, but it listed the pronunciation as sounding like "sigh'ga" (with a long i).

I'm not saying either of these pronunciations is the commonly accepted pronunciation in the area where the antelope come from or that either is "correct", just that these references conflict with each other and make this whole thing rather confusing.

Vepr is "Vep-er"...


Saiga means Antelope in Russian...
Vepr means Wild Boar in Russian...
