Hey guys, i just picked up a centerfire systems ak74 clone, and after putting many hours in refiniahing it, polishing the bolt and puttin laminate wood on it, it looks amazing! However, i would really love it to be a sidefolder. I know the hive answer is always "get both" but i can't afford that. I have seen the dph sidefolder for 99 bucks but it looks like it take some modification to the receiver? Im pretty good with a dremel but would prefer to not cut my weapon, but if it has to be done then so be it. So my question is, can a nodak spud 2 receiver take a sidefolder with little or no modification? If it wont work then what about an ace sidefolder? The ace one looks pretty cool too but more money.

this is prolly on a tacked or archived thread but in short, it takes a lot of work and the front trunion has to be demilled for the front latch to be installed. the back work isn't too bad but it will not lock in the folded position w/o the front latch. the ace can be done easily if you are a dremel man.

Thhanks for the quick reply. I really don't want to do any major mods or cutting just for a side folder so maybe the ace is the way to go. What exectly needs to be done to make the ace fir? I saw that there folder says it fits most stamped receivers so that's a plus...

there are several styles of ace adaptors. some bolt w/ the rear tang intact and some require that you cut the tang off. they look better w/ the one that removes the tang. someone makes a triangle that bolts directly in but it doesn't look as good as the true 74 type. a romy type wire folder or a crutch style will bolt right in also. personally, i'd find one that is a direct bolt in incase you change your mind again.

This is how I would go, just get a factory sidefolder.

Why not just a simple robust wire folder?
No mods needed.

Honestly i am really thinking about going that way now. I like the triangle folders alot for the originality factor of it. I found wire folders for  $60 is that a decent price? Thinking that and some paracord may just do the trick...

Romy wire folders are pretty commonly sold in the EE for around $50 - $60.

The wire folder is robust and reliable.  It also doesn't require any permanent modifications to the rifle and takes just minutes to install.  The downside is that they don't allow a cheek weld.  I played around with mine before starting on the mods and I could see that I wouldn't be happy with it in its original state.  Would like to finish it up but it's just been too damn hot and I've been too busy to finish it.  It is coming along though and so far it is looking promising.

I'm working on an idea now, that I hope will rectify this problem for me.  I bought a lever type Romy wire folder just to test my idea about improving it, because I want a folder but didn't want to modify my rifle.  If it works out, great, if it doesn't I'll scrap it and go with my second choice of a "cut-the-tang" version of the Ace folder.  I really like the Ace but I just didn't want to cut the tang in case I ever decided to go back to a conventional stock.

I believe the push button type of Romy folder would work better than the lever type that I'm using, because the "wire" is off-set to the left, but I got mine for a good deal from a member here and didn't want to spend too much just to test an idea that may not work out anyway.
