how much of a difference will it make to shut off the gas valve? 200 FPS? maybe?

No but a friends AMD65 gives up only about 150 fps to his SAR, 12.5" to 16", so I doubt much at all will show.

I had no idea the AMD lost so little! that is great news!

ok, so it surely gains less than 200 FPS.

I am sure it feels like it kicks even more than that though, as the bolt does help with felt recoil.

Wouldn't long barrels loose moore velocity?

My theory:
If you look on AMD65 12" barrel, the gas block is located allmost at the end of the barrel, so it looses only gas from about 1" of the barrel lengh.

And if you look on the regular AK 16in barrel, you will see that barrel extends furthe from the gas block (about 3 in).

So proportionally speaking 16in AK should have 3 times more velocity loss then AMD.

I my self sure that the difference is not that dramattic, but it is there.

Good luck.

that's a darned good point.

The AMD gas port is only one inch father back than a regular AK, I Am sure not all gas excapes instantly.. but it does drop the pressure quickly.

But with the gas port shut off, a yugo has about 5 extra inches of barrel, where as a regular AK only ahs about 1 extra inch, past the gas pot (compared to an AMD).

the plot thickens.

I would bet a yugo with a gas valve shut off shoots teh same as a long barrle AK (RPK) anybody got some balistics on an RPK?
