What's the story on the upcoming AKM receiver?

I was just looking at their M70 one and it looks good.

Are the AKMs going to be technically correct Euro-style receivers minus the full-auto capability like the old FEG receivers or are they just going to be "closer" than the other guys stuff?

I'm talking about all the little details that truly make a difference, not just good looking dimples in the side. All though just having a 100% receiver that looks like the real deal would be a big improvement.

ETA: In a nut shell, all the problems metioned on the massive 15 page thread over here.
My biggest fault is the gap at the top of the safety when the weapon is put on safe.

Come on Harlan, spill the beans. I asked him specifically about the AKM receiver and the only information he shared was 1.0mm shell. I think it's still in the design process and a final design is not yet available. I did however share my desires of double trigger bumps and the selector recesses as well as the proper mag dimple. If that turns out he will have the best available receiver. Keep those fingers crossed.

Let us know what features and details you want on the AKM receivers.
Thanks.

Perfect idea for yah Harlan..

Get a SAR 1, not a WASR, but a SAR 1(with the dimples), and copy the receiver to excact specs.. That is about as close as you can get...

How about no alignment pin holes [drain holes] on the bottom.
Link Posted: 9/14/2005 5:29:13 PM EDT
Actually...try to find a registered Russky AKM and copy everything on that receiver except for the infamous "third hole"

The FEG receivers were good food.

Hi Harlen. Thank you for responding to this thread.

Technical things IMHO should be done.

#1 Stamp upper frame rail to proper thickness.
#2 Heavy (high heat /pressure) spot welds for maximum strength (see pics).
#3 Add reinforcing "Dimple" to ejector.
#4 Upper rail at ejection port area relieved, not removed.

Personal preferences.

No trunnion holes.
Single hook trigger hole.
Parkerized option.

I think it would be better to make separate 7.62 and 5.45 caliber receivers with the solid stock square back instead of making different solid stock and underfolders like you did for the Yugo.

There are far too many different stocks for the AKM for any one other than the solid stock to stand out sales wise.

The AK-74 is too different to look right with an AKM receiver.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PIC time for the cosmetics. (most of these pics came from Avtomats-in-action.com , however I reposted them so as not to be a bandwidth thief) As promised I will not talk about the MAG dimples, but you can see what they really should look like <GRIN>.

The AKM needs oval dimples that look all most like knife cuts for the selector postions , not square notches to look right.

Russian AKMS:

Romy AIM:

Spot welds should be done heavily, but not "over done" like these.

MAADI AKM form "RED DAWN"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The AK-74

There are a bunch of highly visable details in the receiver.
I'll let the pics do the talking.

Harlan-

I appreciate your asking which features we would like to see on an AKM receiver. Equally important, I think, are features that we do not want to see. I don't think that any of my requests would increase the cost of the receiver, assuming that you don't already have the dies made.

Here's my wish list:

I'd like an AKM receiver with the following features:

1. 1.0 mm metal thickness
2. Proper, complete heat treating
3. Custom serial numbers available

4. Mag well dimples like the Maadi receiver
5. Spot weld placement and characteristics of Maadi
6. No #%$&*@! writing on the sides
7. Proper "Chicken Feet" X and Y stamping. The only example of the "Y" I could find was on a Romy receiver shown in the second photo.

8. Mag well dimples like the Maadi receiver
9. Spot weld placement and characteristics of Maadi. Especially important are the number & placement of the 2 welds over the mag dimple.
10. No #%$&*@! writing on the sides, ever, for any reason!
11. No selector lettering, no selector "ticks". And I mean absolutely none. We can do it ourselves like we want it. Also less work for you.
12. Reinforcement dimple of the size and shape shown on the Maadi receiver under the selector lever cut out.
13. Reinforcement dimple where the third axis pin would go (even though we can't have one). The only one I could find is from a Romy receiver shown in the second photo.

14. Stepped rails as shown on the FEG receiver.

15. Cut out for single hook trigger only. If someone wants double hook triggers they can modify it themselves.
16. Holes for trigger guard rivets only. No holes for front or rear trunnions. We can do it ourselves, too many variations, less work for you to leave them off.

If you make your AKM receivers with these features and price them within $15 of you nearest competitor, I'll buy 6 right off the bat.

Otherwise, what Mike said.

Harlan you have very graciously discussed some of the issues I have about the Yugo receivers with me via email. I'm still waiting for the right yugo. If you make the AKM receivers true to their foreign design, I will gladly pay $100 per receiver with custom serial number and appropriate features. What every receiver manufacturer in the US has failed to realize thus far is that people spend thousands of dollars on these builds. We wait months or years to get them done and go through countless hours gathering the correct and authentic parts. Why the hell would we do all that and skimp out on some bullshit, half-assed receiver like the market now produces? I have several kits that are waiting for the appropriate receiver. I just won't put them in some POS (unless new legislation forces me to do so, obviously).

Thanks for listening.

What you posted seems so obvious. If certain people are willing to spend so much time, money, blood. sweat and tears getting the parts for these things OF COURSE they would be willing to spend the money for a correct receiver.

I know I would!

Ted Marshall has been hinting around at this, BTW.

I disagree with both of you.

If I want a Half-Assed Receiver, I'll do it myself without any help from Ewbanks, GT or Ohio Ord.

Right now I have 4 Romy kits and it wouldn't kill me to spend even $100 for a receiver that works/looks great.

In fact, it would still be a deal compared to a completed rifle.

Maybe it's just me, but if I'm gonna spend the money and jump through the hoops to get a 100% receiver,
it better damm well be 100% right.

WTF????

Do I need to go to remedial Engrish class??? Isn't that what I just said??? Didn't I just say that I and many others would gladly pay the premium price for a perfectly correct American-made replica receiver???

I guess I better work on my communication skillz...

Kevin_M4:

Just curious, do you want an AKM receiver or an AK74 receiver? All of the features shown in your pics are for an AK74 and your post doesn't say which you want.
Link Posted: 9/18/2005 2:21:16 PM EDT
That's a good point, but all the new stuff is all 74 based. I would want all the new features.
Link Posted: 9/18/2005 3:23:45 PM EDT
I would suggest two lines of receivers.

7.62 with all pertinent Russian AKM features

5.45 with all pertinent Russian AK74 features

Those who have posted images have selected both AKM and AK74 features. What is the consensus, do you want a AK74 receiver that is distinctly different from the AKM (7.62x39) receiver?
How about using the Hungarian SA85 receiver as a guide for the AKM version, and the SAR-2 receiver as a guide for the AK74 version?
I doubt that we will include any features that have to do with the third hole area.
