Like the topic says, can you install standard AK wood or polymer handguards or pistol grip on an AMD-65 without sugery/replacing the fron handguard retainer? If so it might be a cheap way for me to do a cool build. Oh yeah, what is the barrel threading on the AMD-65? Thanks!

Sorta. Lower handguards will fit with some modification to the top of the front. The upper handguards are the same, but the gas tube will have to be shortened and expanded. It's a 3 on a scale of 1-5 for gunsmithing and can be done with a few simple tools. Many have installed the sets on their AMD-65's. Me, I'd rather have a cut-down Tapco grip as it looks 'cool' to me.

Wait a tick! Will the Tapco Galil hanguards fit? Because that is exaclty what I was looking at- kill two birds with one stone on that if they will work with minimal mods!

Soooo....it is and AMD-65 with an AMD-65 handgaurd...um, am I missing the point of what you are posting here? The original questions was that I want to remove the AMD-65 handguard and put on a standard AK handguard...is that possible?

The Tapco Galil handguards should fit fin Ive been debating getting them also check out the EE someone has them for $33 which will save you about $7 plus Tapcos minimum shipping I also have the matching SAW grips up for sale

As for standard handguards to do it right you will need to cut and expand a standard gastube using a press and socket extension. As for me Im cheap and lazy so I just taped mine on with electrical tape

it will work untill I get around to doing it correctly.

Dawg, the Tapco Galil type fits just fine . Takes 2 minutes with a dremel on the front end of the handguard . oh yeah , thread size is 14mm L/H
