What was the AK that could take converted FAL mags?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What was the AK that could take converted FAL mags?

I'm looking for a reliable, compact .308 carbine that uses affordable mags and is easy to maintain. I seem to remember there was a .308 AK that would accept modified FAL mags or was modifid to accept FAL mags?

probably a VEPR or Super VEPR. possibly a Saiga though. definitely modded the rifle or the mags for that

Saiga .308's have been converted to take HK G3/HK91 mags as well as M14 mags. VEPR .308's haven't been converted to any mags that I have known about in the last few years. Dont know of any that have taken FAL mags.

Hmmmmm swore it was FAL mags, but could have been G3s/91s. Anybody have any more information on these?

Tony Rumore at Tromix is converting US M14 mags to fit Saiga 308s. I have two ordered for my 16" Saiga, but he is still in the r&d stage. There is a thread going at the Saiga-12 forum.

Any reason not to buy a FAL carbine?

I own a DSA SA58 Carbine and it is becoming one of my favorites. I picked it up used for $800. Mags go from $5 to $12 each and are strong and reliable.

The .308 FAL compliments a 7.62x39mm AK quite nicely.

I own a FAL carbine, sorry, thought I mentioned that in this thread but didn't. I'm not enamored with the weight or the ergonomics of the FAL or the sights... though those can be changed. Even in carbine form it is heavy and unwieldy. Right now it is the rifle I would likely grab, but isn't ideal.

I have an Imbel 16" barrel FAL carbine, it weighs in at 8.5 lbs and I added an AR style rear sight, now it is perfect and even more ergonomic than an AR. My DPMS AP4 .308 16" carbine weighs 8.5 lbs as well. I wouldn't want a .308 to be any lighter than this, way too much recoil if it gets much lighter.

Sure as hell feels a lot heavier than 8.5 pounds... should weigh mine. How much weight does a bipod add? Don't want to remove it if somebody knows offhand. Also, are any furniture options less weighty than others? Recoil doesn't bother me all that much. I haven;t weighed my AR10 SEBR carbine either, but if I had to guess I'd say it was less than 8,5 pounds.

The bipod adds about 1.5 lbs all up front. Take it off and man, it's like a different rifle. Also, go with a synthetic handguard, either the FN/Imbel or the DSA US made ones, that will help with weight a lot.

You can also get an aluminum lower receiver from DSA which will save even more weight.

Try their U.S. made extended safety switch (metric) - It looks a little ungainly until you try it. I couldn't think of any way that any Kalashnikov platform would be more ergonomic than a FAL in this configuration.

Hmmmmmm, if the Bipod comes off I'll need new handguards. I've handled the rifle with the bipod down and it feels wierd to grip the handguards with those grooves in the edges. A pound and a half huh? Damn, that would make a huge difference!
