I had quite a few international friends in Afghanistan who were kind enough to let me take photos of their AK's up close and personal.  These are of a Romanian Soldier's PA md. 86 (AIMS-74, or AK-74, or w/e)

I got to fire this particular AK on full auto and it was awesome to say the least!  One day I will post pics of all the guns I have encountered while traveling around A-Stan but until then enjoy!

Yummy  that's an AIMS right?  Why the D ring of the sling thru the cleaning rod??

Good eye,  I didn't catch that.  Doesn't make sense;  The rod would probably bend from heavy sling usage.

I noticed the D ring too, it seemed like they did that because it was less crap bouncing around, they liked the open triangle in the buttstock because they could easily clip a carabiner ring off their vest onto it

yep this is the PA md. 86, the AIMS-74 is the export edition, which I think is the exact same thing

Also notice the Safe, Full Auto (infinity sign), Semi auo (1)t, and Burst (3)

it puts the pivot of the sling on the 6 o'clock of the rifle instead of the side, probably so it just slings on the shoulder more comfortably.

Weird angle on the charging handle, it looks to be a re-weld?

I believe that's how the Romy's are made.

It sure does look to be cut and welded on at an angle, but it would be nice to have an upswept charging handle I like it ergonomics wise. It messes with the head when I look at it. I am so use to standard chargeing handles. It would let you use left hand to sweep it easier to charge fresh mag change and be in back into fire postion faster. I always liked galils but hated how large the chargeing handle was though easier to use left hand to charge looks like this is an option that is the lesser of two evils. It is growing on me I may do it to my wasr. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Great Photos!!!

Note the unique metal part on the selector stop (seen with arrow), I have only seen this on ROMAK II's CUR II and very early SAR-2's (the ones that have upturned bold handles) , also note the triangle proof mark only my 99' SAR-1's and SAR-2's have the same triangle proof marks. Thanks for sharing.....

Mike, I just checked my CUR2 and it has that triangle proof also.  I never saw it before;  It is really faint.  It has numbers stamped inside, either "424" or "121".   Thanks to you also!  Great thread here.

Also, I never really paid attention to the bottom of the upturned charging handle (I've only shot this gun once since the late 90's).  But there are clearly what appears to be grind marks where a "Normal" straight-out charging handle would be.
