I am installing an Ultimak on an SGL-21 and am having a lot of trouble getting the forend retaining lever to go back.  I have done this one other time and didn't run into this; I think it was just built tight.  I've given it a lot of good wacks with a mallet and am considering taking a dremel to the retaining cap as it seems to be stuck at one point.  Any recommendations on solving this?  Thanks.

I would consider using a crescent wrench like a cheater bar: if I recall, that lever has two flat surfaces in the direction of travel with a ball on the end, so get a tiny wrench that will grip the flat spot and use that to lever it loose.

Of course, if it doesn't start to give, don't snap the lever off. As a fallback, hit it with some penetrating oil and let it soak over night and try again. Any signs of rust?

Thanks for the reply.  I did try that, but felt like I was about to break it so I stopped.  I did spray it last night, so I'll check it tonight.  There is no rust.

Are you sure the retainer is fully seated? If it's not then the channel on the barrel that the lever locks into won't be lined up.
I had this happen on my SLR106 so I put the gun stock down on the floor, put a small piece of wood against the retainer, and hammered down on it. This caused the retainer to fully seat and I was able to flip the lever.

sounds like the retainer is not seated correctly. make sure its in its proper place. you may need to adjust where the ultimak is mounted slightly

What was the end of the story?

HOly hell, I had this same problem with installing it on my converted 5.45 saiga.

I basically rubber malleted my lower handguard down as far as it would go in the reciever and put the retainer in place and smacked it down with a big crescent wrench that had a rubber coated handle.

Eventually, the retainer handle fell into place with a "little" struggle, but its been holding up solid ever since.
