Not happy with sling lengthen on my AK's. Any suggestions on how to extend their length or would it be better to purchase a longer one and if so where? Thanks!!! |

I know they come in at least two lengths, as most of mine are about 47", but two are about 58". Just don't remember if I bought the longer one's, or got them at a show, or if they came with one of the AK's. Unfortunately, most all the AK slings on the web don't mention their length. If you want a traditional AK sling, rather than one of the modern tactical slings, your best bet is to bring a measuring tape with you to the next gun show in your area and measure before you buy. |
It's actually called Type III nylon, and it's not just a Marine trick. It's common anytime we find a sling being too short for our needs, not flexible enough due to sling mounts, etc. I take a piece of type III, the length depending on my needs, run it through the looped end of the sling twice, then tie it to itself. This then gets mounted where ever you wish to attach your sling. I'd recommend looking at how you intend to carry your weapons slung and let that determine which end you add the type III loop to. Carrying the weapons slung, meaning slung with no chance of needing to put it into action, it'll be muzzle up or muffle down, depending on SOP. Ours are always muzzle down to protect the aircraft we're on, so if I need a long loop it will be on the front, not the rear. If you're not wearing any type of harness, armor, etc, having that type III loop riding on your shoulder gets painful. Not so much a problem if you keep the loop short on that end though. As far as where to mount the type III loop, with the GAU/GUU/M-4 I'll wrap it through the bottom sling loop on the buttstock, then knot it tight on the top of the buttstock with a loop for the sling. I keep this loop short. I do it for flexibility on the butt. On the front it'll depend on whether I'm carrying the '203 or not. If I'm not carrying the '203 I also tie the loop off to the front sling swivel. If I'm carrying the '203 I normally have a cable adapter that feeds through the A-frame. I've never had it happen, but I'd imagine you could melt the type III if you weren't careful. |
