Natzchez Pro-Mag link

I did the pushup test and the lug did not crack (I am 6' and 175 lbs.)

When I went to hand-cycle a magazine,  I had 4 failure to feeds, always on the left-hand side of the magazine and always because the bolt did not properly strip the round.

I think it MAY have worked if I had removed material from the top of the lug instead of the bottom.  The magazine will be sent back to Pro-Mag.  If I can get one or two to work they will make OK range mags.

I have ordered 9 Tapco AK47 mags - Sportsman's guide has them in 3-packs for $40.47.  They look a lot better than the Pro-Mags,  and I also wish they would make a 5.45x39 version.

Was the problem that the lug on the mag wouldn't go up high enough to let the catch on the rifle hold it in? If that's the case, you should look at the rear of the left feed lip on the mag closely while you're trying to insert it. It's hard to see when you're trying to do it... take the top cover off the rifle and try to look from the inside... or better yet, take a piece of paper and see if the left rear of the lip is contacting the lower guide rail in the rifle. That condition will stop the mag from locking in place and from the outside it would appear that the mag catch lug on the mag was too low... but the real problem (usually) is that the feed lip needs to be cut down a bit to let the rear of the mag swing back/up enough for the catch to seat. This happens on certain rifles even with the majority of military surplus mags... which is why when you look at mil-surp mags, you'll almost _always_ notice that part of that feed lip has been filed/cut away.

If you look at the reviews at midway, it appears that the pro-mag mags have the exact same issue as the mil-surp ones. The big difference being the fact that mil-surp mags have a steel insert that keeps things solid even when some of the plastic on the lip has been cut away... and unfortunately, the pro-mag ones don't have the steel insert... meaning that the feed lip will have a weak area at that point after you file/cut it down.

The thing that is still up in the air, from what I can see, is just _how_ weak the area can be and still prove to be reliable over the long term. One of the guys who did a review at midway felt that the mags wouldn't last long in that condition, but I guess in reality, only time will tell after more people buy them and modify them to work properly.

This whole subject... that of the rear of the left feed lip on the 5.45 mags... is really interesting to me. I have two 74 type rifles, and one requires more of the lip to be cut away than the other does. The only thing I can guess is that when the rifles are put together there must be small variations in the height of the lower left guide rail (which includes the ejector) in relation to the bottom of the receiver. Just some small variation from rifle to rifle. Pretty strange, but it's definitely a common thing, or the mil-surp mags wouldn't all have cuts on them.

Anyway, good luck getting your mag replaced, and thanks for the link to the cheaper place to get them. I might get one or two just to experiment with.

It was not feed-lip related.  I have 3 5.45 AKs and have had at least one for over ten years - I am pretty familiar with them.  The top of the lug fit smoothly against the gun with no gaps.  Normally,  milsurp mags that need filing have needed it on the bottom,  but maybe I should have done it on the top.

Even filed, I did pushups on the gun with no problems.  Whatever polymer they use is strong,  and $13 is cheap enough.

I bought a couple of these mags to try out.  They are well-built and are the AK equivalent of a Pmag.  I will buy more.

A 100% US made mag that works and counts for 3 parts is welcomed.

Tapco, great job.  Now makes some 5.45 mags!

I see. No contact. That's interesting, since in almost every case I've seen with the euro mags, if there was a problem, it was caused by contact at the top not allowing the bottom of the catch on the mag to go up far enough to engage the catch on the gun... thus all the file marks you see on mil-surp mags. In the end though, with any particular mag/gun combo, weather you file on the top rear of the left feed lip or on the bottom of the mag catch would just depend on weather or not you're able to get rounds to hand cycle while you hold the magazine firmly in the rifle to test the feed angle.

It's good to hear that they're made of heavy duty material. Like I was saying, I'll have to get a couple of them and see what mods (if any) will be required for them to fit in my rifles. As long as they can be filed/adjusted one way or the other so that they work in the majority of rifles, 13 bucks is definitely a good price. Thanks again for the link.

Still though... I'd love to see Tapco make 5.45 mags too. I'm sure they'd be good ones, 'cause I know they'd be sure to work out all the kinks before releasing them.

Hey, Damiean!

Can you let us know if Tapco has any plans for these magazines in other calibers?  I'm sure these in 5.45x39, especially at under $20 a pop, would be a solid seller in today's market.

After all the requests, we are taking some preliminary looks at what would be involved in producing some other calibers.  I don't have any kind of definite answer, but I will keep you all informed of our progress.

And yes, we will always keep everyone's thoughts, opinions, and suggestions in mind if this thing gets rolling.

Simple.

When an AR mag has pressure applied to it when in the rifle from any other angly than straight up ot straight down, the ENTIRE mag body in the mag well absorbs the energy.

The force it is possible to apply to the mag catch area of an AR mag is quite small.

Now look at an AK mag.  The rear lug is TINY and it is not difficult to apply leverage to it because it is the ONLY thing keeping the mag in the magwell.

Basically, an AR magwell supports the mag a great deal, and the AK magwell offers no support for the lug.

With modern materials metal feedlip inserts are not necessary, IMHO.  However, I do not believe that modern materials are strong enough to make a tiny lug upon which 2 to 1 leverage can be applied strong enough.

Oh, and the rear lug is also the only thing keeping the mag from pressing farther up into the mag well at the rear.

I am going ot buy one of these mags and try it out and I will sing their praises if it turns out it is a good tough as nails mag.  I just don't see it happening.

Well I bought two Tapco 20 rounders for one of my Norincos.  I still have the factory wooden stock on the rifle.  First mag ran great.  I took it out, reloaded it and it fed the first round fine.  Then FTF every single round afterward.  Both did the exact same thing.  I will have to try to fiddle around with the mag well on the wooden stock.  I plan on buying the Tapco stock soon so hopefuly that will take care of it.

I was using Wolf and Barnaul ammo in the mags.

20 Rounders for the SKS.  When using with the original wooden stocks some filing may be required... the below image is on our FAQ page...

You can file the material away, or if you are already planning on upgrading, keep your stock original and go with the new stock body.  Either option should get your running smoothly.

Awesome!

The new replacement magazine arrived yesterday.  TAPCO wasted no time in getting the new mag mailed out and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the response.

The new magazine is a little different than the old one.  First off, I notice that it's got a slightly wider front locking tab.  It's also rounded off a little along the top back edge of the feed lips.  I imagine this was done to allow the magazine to clear the center support rivet on a larger variety of receivers.  The new magazine is also marked with "7.62x39" while the broken magazine didn't have any caliber markings.

I also see that the new magazine is a little different color than the old one.  Both are black but the new one is a little bit shinier.

Got my 3 tapco 30 rounders in yesterday. Right off the bat I was really impressed with the magazine. HEAVY DUTY is a good description. I was a bit worried about a poly magazine, but this thing is STOUT!

My only issue with the mag so far was initially it would not clip into my Norinco MAK90, which is when I learned about the small 'nub' under the magazine release. I simply ground this 'nub' off (which also prevented other new steel mags from fitting), and the Tapco mags fit great. Still a bit stug on the release but Im sure they will loosen with use.

If the weather cooperates Ill give these tapco mags some use this weekend, but as smooth as they seem to operate Im sure I wont have any issue.

THANKS!! I will order more of these!

I took 2 new TAPCO mags to the range this weekend.  Shooting them in a Polytech.  Both mags FTF after the initial round.  New round would not load even after I pullled the operating handle.  I had to remove mag and the pull operating handle to load a round.  I was firing Wolf 7.62x39.  Any ideas why it was doing this?

what type variant of AK were you using?  I will be glad to run it by some guys here and see if they know of anything.

I do know that fitment in some of the WASR's varies, depending on how much they opened up your mag well.  We found some play in some WASR's but the mags always functioned.

Well it didn't "work", it didn't even fit in the gun. What is the deal? Really disappointed because they looked really nice and I wanted them to be good so badly. Now I have to hope I can return it, which is unlikely since it got scratch up and I don't feel its right to stick the store with a "used" product.

My rife is a WASR-10 if that matters.

I bought 6 a few months back when they were fairly new, they work great in my Romy's and with a very minor adjustment work in my Saiga conversion. I picked up 6 more recently, they were packaged different, plain clear plastic bag, no cardboard Tapco card on the bag. I've heard these are different from the first ones out and not as stout, I hope this is just a rumor since I haven't open the bag or tried them.

I just purchased four of these from Midway and received them today. The reviews there said these worked perfectly with the Wasr 10-63, which is what I have. I noticed that when I insert these, the back of the magazine does not "snap" in like my metal mags do. They fit fine and snugly, but I can release them from the well simply by pulling on the back. I do not need to use the release lever. Is this normal? Is it safe to fire with these?

That is not good. Mine is like that as well and will get stuck. Can yours function like that?

It really disappoints me

See the back of the mag in this picture from their website? Mine is different where it snaps into the mag release switch.

That is more the fault of the Century monkey that did the conversion than the TAPCO mag being at fault. Century has to grind the mag releases to some extent for conversion to a hi-cap. Each WASR 10 is unique and can vary wildly.

Yep.

Additionally, I've had some minor fitting issues even with metal magazines on my WASR (width-wise as well as with the locking lug).  I wouldn't damn the TAPCO mags because of fitment issues, especially on a WASR.  I'd break out a file and slowly file them down until they fit.

File down the tab? I just wish I had something out of the box that worked properly. I don't think my rifle was done by Century. I don't see "century" anywhere on it although I could be wrong. ALL other mags I've used fit nicely.

However I have been contacted by a Tapco representative we believe its is because its on of the early magazine designs. I belive Tapco is going to help me out, which is great because I've heard they stand behind their products and its seems to be true.
