I've got the Tapco grip and FCG on my Saiga and am very satisfied with the quality. It's great to see another product on the market.

Damiean, any plans to expand to other calibers?  From the other posts, there's obviously an interest in 5.45 and I would love something in 12 guage.

Right now the only option for 10 round 12 guage mags is going for about $50 and sells out of most places as soon as shipments come in.

Those look great! Thanks for doing this. :-)

While we're on the subject of mags, I wonder if you'd consider making some AK-74 (5.45x39) mags sometime soon as well? As I'm sure you're aware, there is currently _no_ US maker of these mags, and they're only imported sporadically. At the moment, no one appears to have a significant quantity of the imported ones for sale, so when you can find them, they're ~$25 per mag or more (for the 30 round ones). The ones with a capacity larger than 30 go for truly insane prices, as they are more rare.

If Tapco makes those, and can price them competitively, I'm sure they'll sell well.

For that matter, it would be good in those could be made in both 5.45x39 and 5.56x45. I'm sure they would both be popular.

Thanks again!

- Edited to add - Any and all of these mags (7.62 or otherwise) need the metal reinforcement. The photos above certainly show why. If they're not durable, nobody is going to want them.

I did receive the report from Forster's testing.  We will be replicating his tests tomorrow to see if we can achieve the same result.  None of our other testing (internal or outside the company) has resulted in a mag failure of any kind.

I will gladly share the test results ASAP.

I have completed the first portion of my testing of the Tapco Magazine.  Six different rifles, 5 different shooters, same results.  240+ rounds of various FMJ and no failures to feed or function.HM91....beautiful2,  Arsenal SA93............snug fit, various FMJ ammo..............no issues.
3,  WASSR 10...............snug fit, Wolf FMJ.....................no issues.
4,  Romanian on DC receiver........snug fit....FMJ reloads............no issues
5,  Romanian "G", DC receiver.........snug fit....Winchester...........no issues
6,  Yugo kit...unmarked receiver.......snug fit.........Wolf...............no issues

One young tough guy did the pushup trick..........., I drove over it with a pickup, we threw it in the mud by the horse trough, swished it off a couple times in the water......filled it and fired it.............no issues.her

In my experience with the AK magazine I have had two East German that had the metal reinforcements crack at the front lug.  The pieces in fact did not break off but the magazine would not feed.  These were used in my 5.56 SAR3 and who knows what caused that issue.his

I did a bit more testing today and again with several types of ammo.  I used the Tapco magazine in a Mac90 and a Yugo of some sort.  Again with no issues after 90 rounds of FMJ through each rifle.
I then filled the magazine with Wolf hollow point.  29 rounds without a hitch and the last round had the blunt hollow point hang up on the feed trough on the trunion.  A slight bump on the carrier fed the round into the chamber.  The rifle used was the Mac 90.  I then took 30 rounds of reloaded hollow point and fired the same test with the same rifle.  30 rounds down range with no problem.  Examination revealed the Speer hollow-point was less blunt than the Wolf and so had no issues with feeding.  I suppose that is no surprise though.  The rifles I tested with were all designed and built with one purpose in mind.  That is to function flawlessley with FMJ bullets.  I suspect a slight polish on the feedramps of the rifles would facilitate perfect function with the hollow points also.
My opinion is that the Tapco magazine will give good service and reliability in all respects with proper rifle handling.  In 50+ years of experience with firearms, whether in the USA or Southeast Asia I learned that proper rifle control and care resulted in great performance from a multitude of weapons.  I have to admit I never purposely attempted destruction of my equipment.  The Tapco magazine will stand up to any abuse controlled rifle handling can offer........llc

After 9 rifles and about 700 rounds I have finished initial testing of the new Tapco magazine.
Buy it, it is inexpensive, tough, and it works.
The only issue I had was with hollow point ammunition while firing a Mac90.  The last round failed to feed.  I had the same situation with a kit rifle.
I noted roughness on the feed ramps of both rifles.  I polished the ramps to a finish comparable to my other rifles and retested.............perfect function.  The magazine is well worth the investment...............llc

I got two mags from Copes. They look good. The followers in them also fit in my synthetic waffle Bulgarains and steel Hungarian and generic Eastern European 30 rd. mags. They do not fit in Chinese flatback  mags.  Time will tell if the mag catch will hold up. HOwever, if nothing else these will make good range mags. I think Tapco  will also do well to just sell the followers. I am not sure if these use the same followers that tapco sells currently.

Hey Tapco.

Start making some of these in 5.45x39 for the love of god if you know what's good for you! 10,000 Bulgarian AK kits are coming into the country in September and mags for the AK-74 are already scarce and expensive. Imagine what it will look like when people start buying mags to feed those guns... If you can take this design and put it into the AK-74 platform you will make serious money and save us all from a potentially disastrous drought of mags.

Two arrived today from Cope's, super fast shipping.  Both mags are in the  "break-in" phase.  Still a tight fit in mag well (vector 1mm), but feels very solid.  Put about 60 rounds through each one with zero feed problems.   Did my own AK pushup reliability test as well.

My main concern is the locking tab shearing off.

A full reinforcement is proabally not necessary with modern polymer but a steel locking tab would make me feel warm and fuzzy.

I suggest you take a locked and loaded rifle with a mag full of dummy rounds and then toss it in the air numerous times to see what happens.

another happy customer - these are the PMags for AKs. I bought one just to see how it would hold up. Everyone in the shop(work at a Class III gunshop in FL) took turns stomping and jumping on it, dropped it fully loaded about 100 times, staple gunned it, threw it against walls, its awesome - i ordered 5 more, I will own a TON of these.

you should call them TMags :) They are that good! im sure magpul wouldnt mind :/ LOL

I plan on shooting it unloaded and seeing how the polymer holds up once its been compromised

thanks Tapco for making a great product!.

Actually, Pro-Mag does.  It may be a POS - I don't know yet.  I will do a pushup on a 5.45 Pro-Mag sometime soon, although I don't know if that is a reasonable test.  I will also shoot a bunch of ammo through one soon - which is a reasonable test for me.  I have a BUNCH of East German 5.45 mags,  so I can use the Pro-Mags as range mags if nothing else.  The mag does look pretty decent.

ok, so i did things to my Tapco mag no one should do. Like stated above i already had all the guys stomp on it - loaded and unloaded. Well how about doing all those things and worse after the polymer was compromised? how do you compromise such amazing polymer you ask? Why, shoot it of course. one round, .223, point black. i did wipe the muzzle flash off....

then proceeded to drop in from 5.5ft(eye level) onto the sharp corner of a curb while fully loaded, then had all the guys stomp on it again, loaded and unloaded. dropped it about 15 more times, threw it against the ground about 6 times....

and did it survive? Yes, 100% function.

So moral of the story, buy tapco AK mags :)

I thought about setting this mag aside as a tribute to the punishment but i think i am going to honor it and keep using it, every time i go to the range. I think i am going to shoot it more than any other mag. Just to see how it holds up in the long run.

p.s. i just got 5 more in today, ordering another 10 or 15 over the next month. I am going to use a lot of these mags, i know they will function, i just need to make sure the mags hold up to a lot of use.

Hey, thanks for the info. I haven't seen those before. They must have just come out. Definitely, let us know what sort of performance you get from them. Some of the other pro-mag mags I've owned have done just fine, but I've also had some that had some feed issues, so while I don't have a problem with their stuff in general, it'll be interesting to see how these particular mags do.

Still... I'd rather see Tapco make some 5.45 mags. If they did, and they turned out to be really good like these new 7.62 ones they're making, I know there would be a lot of happy people around here.

Edited to add:  Midway's price seems a bit high. I hope someone else starts selling these at a lower price. $20 just seems a bit high to me.

Oops. I just looked at the reviews of those US made Pro-Mag 5.45 magazines at the midwayusa link, and they are NOT good. Apparently people are needing to file/cut down the feed lips in order to make them lock into the rifle and/or feed properly. - While this is a pretty common thing with surplus mags (anyone who's been shooting ak74 type rifles will have noticed that almost all surplus com-bloc 5.45 mags have a portion of the rear of the left hand feed lip cut down in order to make it fit under the left guide rail) - and this is no problem with the surplus mags because they have steel reinforcing plates in the feed lips - this could possibly be a _very_ significant problem in any mag that doesn't include the steel reinforcing plates... and the pro-mag ones do NOT have the reinforcing plates.

So... it looks to me as if the pro-mag ones might not be reliable.

Please, once again, tapco, please make a _high_quality_ 5.45 mag for us. Pretty please?

My 5.45 Pro-Mag had been just sitting in its bag since I bought it a month or so ago,  so I took it out and put it in a rifle.  I had to file a small amount of material off the bottom of the locking lug - really a minimal amount material needed to be removed.  I bought mine from Natchez for around $13 - not Midway,  but the Natchez link had no photo.

I did the pushup test and the lug did not crack (I am 6' and 175 lbs.)

When I went to hand-cycle a magazine,  I had 4 failure to feeds, always on the left-hand side of the magazine and always because the bolt did not properly strip the round.

I think it MAY have worked if I had removed material from the top of the lug instead of the bottom.  The magazine will be sent back to Pro-Mag.  If I can get one or two to work they will make OK range mags.

I have ordered 9 Tapco AK47 mags - Sportsman's guide has them in 3-packs for $40.47.  They look a lot better than the Pro-Mags,  and I also wish they would make a 5.45x39 version.

Was the problem that the lug on the mag wouldn't go up high enough to let the catch on the rifle hold it in? If that's the case, you should look at the rear of the left feed lip on the mag closely while you're trying to insert it. It's hard to see when you're trying to do it... take the top cover off the rifle and try to look from the inside... or better yet, take a piece of paper and see if the left rear of the lip is contacting the lower guide rail in the rifle. That condition will stop the mag from locking in place and from the outside it would appear that the mag catch lug on the mag was too low... but the real problem (usually) is that the feed lip needs to be cut down a bit to let the rear of the mag swing back/up enough for the catch to seat. This happens on certain rifles even with the majority of military surplus mags... which is why when you look at mil-surp mags, you'll almost _always_ notice that part of that feed lip has been filed/cut away.

If you look at the reviews at midway, it appears that the pro-mag mags have the exact same issue as the mil-surp ones. The big difference being the fact that mil-surp mags have a steel insert that keeps things solid even when some of the plastic on the lip has been cut away... and unfortunately, the pro-mag ones don't have the steel insert... meaning that the feed lip will have a weak area at that point after you file/cut it down.

The thing that is still up in the air, from what I can see, is just _how_ weak the area can be and still prove to be reliable over the long term. One of the guys who did a review at midway felt that the mags wouldn't last long in that condition, but I guess in reality, only time will tell after more people buy them and modify them to work properly.

This whole subject... that of the rear of the left feed lip on the 5.45 mags... is really interesting to me. I have two 74 type rifles, and one requires more of the lip to be cut away than the other does. The only thing I can guess is that when the rifles are put together there must be small variations in the height of the lower left guide rail (which includes the ejector) in relation to the bottom of the receiver. Just some small variation from rifle to rifle. Pretty strange, but it's definitely a common thing, or the mil-surp mags wouldn't all have cuts on them.

Anyway, good luck getting your mag replaced, and thanks for the link to the cheaper place to get them. I might get one or two just to experiment with.

I got two of these in the mail the other day. TAPCO ROCKS! This magazine is tough as hell. I've never seen a polymer as strong as these. No need for metal lips like my Bulgarian waffle and they are a lot cheaper.

It also helps keep my Mak 90 922r compliant.

Thanks to Tony at tapco!
