Which one?

7.62X39

or

5.45X36

Is there a big advantage to the newer, smaller round?

Someone make up my mind.

Well...what are you wanting to get out of this AK?  Are you looking for an accurate paper puncher or rock jumper?  Or does accuracy not matter as much as man-stopping power?  Dow you want one with plentiful mags and super cheap ammo or does than not matter?

I want an AK, to have an AK.

All the other things are secondary, so you tell me.

Are the mags for the 5.45 alot more than the 7.62 mags?

I know the ammo is a little bit more than the 7.62.

Which is more accurate? More powerful?

I know neither one would be a tack driver, so I'm not to worried about that aspect.

tough question.  The motto of Arfcom is when in doubt you must get both.  Personally i prefer 7.62.  I have a small cal rifle in .223 and didn't see the need for another one in yet another calibre.  Buy an SaR-1 while they are still available and be happy.

Damn it. I was going to put I'M NOT GETTING BOTH in the first post, and forgot.

I have two other rifles in .223, so that was out from the start.

What about the 5.45X36 though? Is ammo going to hard to get down the road?

I'd go with the 7.62 x 39 over the 5.45 x 39 for the following reasons:

1) Cheaper ammo which is more readily available.
2) It's the "classic" round for the AK series.
3) "It makes a distinctive sound when fired..."

On the flip side, the 5.45 x 39 is quite a bit more flat-shooting and accurate.  Less recoil too (chicks dig it.)

I like my SAR-1 (7.62 x 39) but I'm also going to have my Bulgarian 5.45 kit from K-VAR built up in the near future.

Get both!

(Just kidding.)

Gman, I think your right.

I guess I'm going the 7.62 route. Thanks.

Are the SAR1s from Century crap?

I know to make sure the front sight is straight.
What else should I look for?

Just an addition to what gman said about ammo avalibility for 7.62x39
Alot of US manufacturers are making 7.62x39,
so you have a wider range of ammo avaliable rather than just what wolf makes.

Thats about it.  The SARs are not the prettiest Ak on the market, but they are not parts kits either. Although I suppose Century's monkeys could ruin anything if you let them have it long enough. They generally work out of the box.  A few tweaks like a redstar trigger and maybe refinish the wood and you will take what is a good rifle and make it a great rifle. Mine, 2000 model, was straight and shot point of aim out of the box.  I have heard that they have only gotten better since then.

Generic accuracy for the 5.45 is a full inch better at 100 than the 7.62 AKs, and much flatter over 150yds in particular. But if you want an AK just to have one and knock stuff around, handpick a SAR1 (straight F&R sights and siderail aligned along the rec/bbl, no massive hitches in the action/sign of crooked US gas piston).
But I shoot my 5.45 more than my AR.

If a person can't get the price of a membership back on this board they're not buying guns, accessories or ammunition !!

I came over to the AK Forum a couple of months ago to learn a little about AK's.  These guys have saved me 'several' memberships by giving advice on the AK's I did buy and probably saved me even more by giving me info on the one's I shouldn't (and didn't) buy !

Hmmmm... started with two milled Bulgie 47s... Down to one...  Since then I have purchased a Romak 2, Custom built 74 by Inrange, 5.45 Krink from ORF and have two Bulgie 74 kits remaining to be built...  Hmmmmmm 7.62 or 5.45... I just don't know...

I like my 7.62 X 39, but I would have to say I prefer the 5.45 round.

I'm guessing you mean MAK90.

I hate the thumhole stock. With the right US parts count, is putting different funiture on it OK?

Yup, stamped receivers need 5 US parts, Milled need 4.  Trigger group = 3, pistol grip plus a piston if you need a fifth.

get em both, i like the 545 better, but how could anybody not own a 762x39 kalashnikov?? the most popular firearm in history.

The ballistics of the 5.45x39 are far superior to the 7.62x39 but then again all "real" AK47s are 7.62x39, BTW, I am hoping to pick up a SAR 3 (AK in .223) at the funshow tomorrow. It will go well with my SAR2 and AR15, sort of a halfway point between the two.

I wanted a 5.45 SAR2, but everyone here is sold out. I am going to pick up my 7.62X39 SAR1 today. local dealers are running out of those also, apparently Century isn't importing any more. If you want one, might want to get one while they are still available cheap....

While it is true that all "real" AK47s and AKMs  are 7.62x39, it's also true that all "real" AK74s are 5.45mm!!  :-)

Recoil on a 7.62??? Oh come on...And accuracy? 7.62 has plenty enough accuracy for combat, if you want a sniper rifle get a bolt-action..The Kalashnikov is a Battle rifle designed for dependability and fire power, as well as hit a large target at several hundred meters, tac driver? No, Brick layer, Yes...
