Thanks to the OP. I've tried & tried and my best was 980.
Don't know if this has been covered yet, but.... Here is how to get 560 into a .30 cal can: Bottom layer goes like this (even has room for a moisture absorbent): 
Top two layers go this way. 
Easy to carry, compact, and will fill 18 mags. I can carry 13, so a full vest & a .30 cal can is good for while. 
If you invert the order of the rows, you can leave the small void for moisture absorbing packs at the top of the can.

Here's how I fit 1,000 rounds of 7.62 x 39 in a .50 cal can: I open up each 20 round box and dump the cartridges into the can and repeat 49 more times. Then I put two dessicant packs on top and seal up the can tightly. Easy peasy. I use .30 cal cans to transport rounds to/from gun club and training center. |

| I got my 5000 rounds from the Armory yesterday. They were packaged in 5 fairly good shape 50 cal cans. Having to carry two of the things boxed together was a fun little adventure. I'm going today or the next to trade the five 50s and some cash for eight 30s. Or maybe he'll trade even... |

Thanks for posting this. This was awesome. I kept looking at the big box that the Golden Tiger comes in and couldn't believe I stuffed all that in that ammo can and didn't even crush the boxes.
Now if I could just find photos of similar tetris-like stacking system for the layers of WPA Military Classic in 5.45x39 and 7.62x39. Those boxes are a little bigger. |

Most regular papers have an acidic component to them. I seriously doubt ammo manufacturers worry with producing packing with acid free papers like you would find for archival art applications. I think most cardboard tends to be moderately acidic. In addition, I've noticed that the papers between the layers of rounds always have a funny smell. I wonder if it is more acidic than conventional paper. Litmus paper or something like a ph testing pen might help determine if it is significantly acidic. My guess would be that it would play enough of a factor in an already semi-humid environment and allow the ammo to deteriorate more rapidly. I would think the humidity between paper-stored ammo and loose ammo would normally be pretty uniform, while the main difference would be the direct contact of paper itself on the ammo. Having said all that, humidity still would probably be the biggest factor by far. |

Does anyone have any suggestions on doing this with 5.45x39? Especially in .30 cal and other sized cans besides .50? How about on stripper clips?
I've put 5.45 on both warsaw pact 15-round stripper clips and I am able to fit 9 rounds on the Thermold .223 plastic stripper clips. The Thermold clips fit into the 2- and 3- clip cardboard boxes for the 120-round (four pocket) and 140-round (7 pocket) bandoleers. The 15-round stripper clips fit perfectly into the 4-pocket bandoleers when you pull the white string. |
