I've been contemplating an AK for some time and now that I've decided to buy, I can't decide which. AK47 or AK74???

I've never owned an AK.  I think I've only held one for about 30 seconds.  As I am a noob, is there any reason I should get one over the other?

I'm pretty much looking for something to take to the range and put an butt load of rounds through every weekend.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!
TD

Whichever one you choose you'll wind up wanting the other.

7.62x39,  ammo and magazines are cheaper

I have a 7.62x39....however I have been wanting a 5.45x39 for some time now...or one of those .223 model. I am torn between getting one of those or a ar15. On a side now I could get both...a ak74 and a .223 ak for the price of a decent ar15. HMMMMM.

I've got one of both (two 5.45s actually) and I have to say I love them both.  5.45 is newer and better in my opinion, but 7.62x39 is tried and true and as stated ammo and different loadings/bullet types are more common for 7.62x39.  I wouldn't want to give up either...

They both cost about the same for mags and ammo. It depends more on who you buy from.

7.62 AKs are everywhere and everyone has one. In other words they are common and even boring at times.

5.45 AKs are rare and wicked looking. They are the most vicious creature you will ever hold in your hands. You must have one!

The 7.62X39 ammo is cheaper, and easier to find at gun stores.

That being said I prefer the 74 in 5.45X39.

You can find 5.45 aplenty through mail order.

If your like most eventually you will buy both anyway.  Buy ammo by the case 1000 rds it's signifigantly cheaper $80-110 either calibre dont pay more than 90 for 7.62.  Also be aware if the ammo is corrosive, if you keep your weapon clean and maintained this wont be a problem.  At least clean the barrel.  I would say start out with 7.62, I think you'lll buy 5.45 as soon as you have extra money to burn.

Thanks guys.  It looks like my local gun store carries 5.45, so I'm going to start with the AK74.

My next question.  Whats a decent price and where should I buy from?

I've seen the AK74 from $400-$1000.  I was hoping for something at the more on the low end, but I could go as high as $700.
