my brother and parents are visiting family in Minnesota right now. my brother saw an SKS in the local gun shop and has asked advice on whether he should buy it. problem is i know next to nothing of SKS'seses's. the guy wanted 475 but said he would knock off 100 to bring it  to 375. my brother and dad said the  finish looked near new, no scratches on the stock or anything and the finish is immaculate.

its a 1948 Tula. they said it had no bayonet. did they ever make them without bayonets? any help or advice would be great, they are planning on going there tomorrow and i can relay anything that they should look for to check it out. first thing that comes to mind is matching serial numbers on the parts. where should they look on the gun? and proof marks or stamps to look for?

they also have a norinco there that takes AK mags, but i heard they jam alot.

my norinco that takes true ak47 mags also never jams.

when you say norinco that takes ak47 mags, are you sure its really ak47 mags or maybe its a norinco w/fixed mag, that they removed to use proprietary mags (not original ak47 mags)

Yep standard AK mags. Swap em back and forth with my other ak variants!

1949 was the first  production year excepting pre-production test and evaluation examples. They never made them (russian mil. production) without bayonettes. If it has 1948 on it it's a mistake, a forgery or a goldmine!

turns out it was a 1950 and had the bayo removed by disassembly.

they couldnt buy it because you need a permit to buy a "military type rifle" in MN

Personally, I would have gone with the norinco over the tula, but that's just my own personal preference.

It took me awhile to find the right (non-thumb hole) monte carlo stock sks-m, but it's awesome and I enjoy the hell out of shooting it (with no jamming).  The one time I had an issue was right after I got it. One of the mags I got with it had a bend at one of two lips at the top of the mag, but that was a mag issue.  A one minute bend back with my gerber multi tool fixed that.
