I notice that on a lot of the Romanian rifles the rivets, at least the "mushoom" shaped portion on the outside of the receiver, have small splits in them at the outer edges. Is this just a cosmetic thing or will it affect the rifle, i.e. make it less durable over time, etc...?

I would think any piece of metal that should be whole but is split would be less durable than if it was done right. Plenty of AKs to choose from without split rivets. I would avoid unless it was all thats left. That said it will probably still out last you and your kid.
