Hey guys, just wanted to see what you guys have done with your WASRs...  anything's welcome really, just so long as whatever you did to customize your AK can be done to a GP WASR-10 :).  Trying to get some good ideas for things to do to it to do any of the following:

1) Improve the accuracy of the rifle
2) Improve the accuracy of the shooter
3) Improve the look and feel of the rifle
4) Suppress recoil/sound
5) HOW DO I PUT MY CARRYING STRAP ON THIS THING!?!?!?!

I've got a fiberforce stock on here right now, and I like it except for the front, so I might swap that out... but i am in love with the skeletonized stock.  Seriously considering adding a Kobra.

Can you replace the muzzle thing on one of these here doohickeys?

thanks guys!

Are you serious? Dude...come on, play with it for a little while. If you cant figure it out after 30 minutes, my next questions will be: who the hell decided you should have an AK? Does your mom know about this?

You can replace the muzzle device if its not perm attatched. Instructions abound. You might be able to find a company that makes suppresors for that thread type, but Ive never looked. Dont forget to make sure suppressors are legal in your state.

If you really like that fiberforce stock, go for it. As long as it is what works for you, ignore the other shooters at the range who declare "you know how I know you're gay?" Seriously, go with what works for you, but I would suggest trying different things. +1 on Choate, if I couldnt have the PG Id have a Choate.

The wasr I got came without anything on the muzzle, just like they never threaded it at all, it's even the right size for threading, all I have to do is just get the die to do it. (14x1 if I'm not mistaken?)

I dont know and neither does anybody else, though it has been hypothesized that it has something to do with its not accepting high caps, as shipped (even though this is easily fixed with a dremel

Thanks for the replies...  I was serious about how to apply the strap, because putting it through that funky little hole on the side of the front... it seems not to hang well from my body...  but, I guess I was doing it right after all.

What all can you replace the muzzle thingamajig with?  And, what kind of thread is it?  I am looking up things to put on there... what about these?

I tried to remove the thing... I pushed down the button, but could not twist it off, does it require a wrench or some kind of tool or what?

Are scopes worth considering?

Any internal parts I should get?

The muzzle brake is a left hand thread. It turns clockwise to unscrew. If you've tried that and it won't move, it's probably permanently attached. I won't go into that since I haven't personally removed one.
Ignore the jokers who don't like the WASR. Buy some ammo and shoot yours. If it works well for you, that's all that matters. Practice will improve your ability to shoot the rifle. if you later decide you want a different AK you can always get a different one.
Remember that the AK was never intended to be a tack driver. It was designed to deliver high volumes of fire on fleeting targets a relatively short range. first and foremost, it has to fire every time the trigger is pressed and accuracy was sacrificed to some extent to ensure that.
Have fun and stay safe.

Ah, I see... I did actually take it back out to the range just today...  (I still smell of CLP)... it was a BLAST...  firing wolf SP junk, did about 300 rounds...

My buddy was trying out his new AR15, so I cranked off a few rounds of that, too...  I'm not expert marksman, but, shooting 2 inch targets out to abour 40 yards, they both perform just about identically...

I can't see a target paper at 100 yards, but, we shot at some anyway... I was on the paper somewhere because I blew a piece of it off...  while he was shooting, I was testing my ability to hit the same spot on the backstop that his smoke emerged from, at 100 yards, and it wasn't all that hard...  I'm sure after 200-300 yards the AR would start outperforming by a longshot, but, for $400+ bucks, vs. $1000+?  I am very happy with the WASR...

There was even a point where we took turns firing at a clay target very far away, and the AK won out... neither of us are expert marksmen, though...  and neither of us have taken the time to properly zero in our sights... I think i'll just get a Kobra and zero that in :).

I gotta say though...  as far as ergonomics go...  ya gotta have a cheek rest...  it helps me keep the same alignment on the sights, and since i've gotten that fiberforce that everyone hates on these forums but loves in real life, that I feel like I am shooting more effectively... (but I'd LOOOOVE to replace my front handguard, since this one sucks)...

Thanks for the info everyone, I'd love to see more information about your WASRs and what all you've done to them!
5/13/2006 5:48:46 PM EDT
[#13]
Are you serious? You want to make descisions on rifles accuracy and you haven't bothered to zero the sights. You can't figure out how a sling works, but you want to insinuate that we are keyboard commandos because we don't like fiberforce stocks. As for Cheek rests they are nice, but not required for accurate shooting.

5/13/2006 6:14:16 PM EDT
[#14]
What "descisions" did I make about the accuracy?  I said "ya gotta have" a cheek rest, informally, but moreso because they are just nice, as you agree to, not because they make all shooters more accurate.

All I did was give a brief, honest summary of my novice day of shooting.  After reading hundreds of threads on both sides of these boards, I fully expected to go to the range and be disappointed with my WASR by comparison to the AR.  That the AR would somehow be this miraculous thing capable of wiping the field clean of all clay targets without the AK having a chance...  and... I found that my perception of this was skewed... that within 100 yards, not looking at paper, just shooting at junk and clay targets that they are very similar in function, neither towering above the other.

I also left plenty of space in my comments for anyone who read to see that I am a novice shooter, and that neither rifle was tuned/tweaked for super awesome performance... both shooters used both rifles to similar results.

I did not make any decisions.

I view "you can't figure out how a sling works" as a personal attack... especially after I had just posted "but, I guess I was doing it right after all."  It honestly seems like you are trying to denigrate me for no reason whatsoever, and I don't think anyone appreciates that... especially while you're wearing that forum moderator tag.

Did I do something to upset you?
5/13/2006 6:41:07 PM EDT
[#15]
NO, you haven't done anything to upset me. However you have to understand that I have seen lots of newer posters some on here and ask the same questions over and over. All to often they don't take any of the advice they are given.

That was in no way a personal attatck, you posted the question. Just asking the question idenitfies you as a very inexperienced AK owner. Me using that to demonstrate why you should probably be doing a lot more reading and less typing, is not a personal attatck. You made some bad descision on this site before, bad enough that the staff of this site felt the need to suspend your account. That should be an indicator to you that you may want to revise your personal policies about dealing with moderators here. I have nothiin against you, and even if I did I would never resort to personal attacks and petty harrasment. I am just trying to give you some advice that will make your ownership of an AK much more enjoyable and affordable.

When I bought my first EBR's  I had a million ideas and questions. Too often I asked the questions after I had spent my money, and in the end would have saved a fortune if I had read more and typed less.

Templar's sling assembly guide

Suppressors have to be legal in your state and you have to pay a fee and fill out paperwork to the gov't to be legal to purchase.  Never bothered with the hassle.

+1, listen to experience kid. we arent making this stuff up, we learned it the expensive way. since we are on that topic:

(1)Dont buy anything from tapco unless it is real military hardware (parts, magazines), inspect it when it arrives and send the shit back if it aint perfect.

(2) NC Star products (cheap scopes/mounts)...

(3)If you want a red dot sight, spend the money to get a eotech or aimpoint, personally I like the aimpoint but thats me. Any other brands, make sure you try them out while the warranty is in effect, so if it does break or suck you can get a refund.

(4)NEVER buy anything for which there is no refund available (except ammo) ammo usually isnt refundable, but as long as you stick to federal, winchester, wolf, barnaul (monarch) or .mil surplus that is specifically labeled as "NON CORROSIVE" you should be good to go.

I do appreciate the advice :)... thanks guys...

How much better is an EOTech than say a Kobra?  I was kinda trying to limit my optics to things that were actually designed for kalashnikovs, but, my AR friend (as mentioned above) has expressed interest in getting an EOTech as well...  for me... that'd mean getting a special mount + an eotech...

In your experience, would you say that... well, given the price total I'd end up paying all said and done, that the eotech is worth 3 times as much as the Kobra?  Is it 3 times better?  With the price of the mount and the eotech, I'd be spending close to $600 bucks... (I am basing this off of initial pricing at this NCStar place just mentioned)

Wouldn't I better serve myself putting that $600 towards an SSG-97, RomAK 3, or other eastern block semi-auto PSL/etc?

I've never used a red dot scope at all, so, keep that in mind when replying...I don't even know how the heck they are used...I just want one because of the kobra/red dot scope threads I've seen here and they get all the praise... plus... I'm all about some high tech stuff :).

Oh... and don't call me kid.  I'm 26.  I *might* let you get away with calling me "padawan" or "honey" if you must use some form of down-talk, but you'd better be a chick if you call me honey.

I forgot to mention the Kobra. I have heard good things about it, just never tried one out myself. Ive never heard anything bad about it. It would appear to be the russian functional equivilant of the eotech, and it is used by russian special forces. Go for it, just make sure you get a russian Kobra and not a knock off, knowing NC Star those shit heads probably make one.

Installing a brake is as easy as screwing it on, assuming you have a threaded barrel.  They help out with muzzle climb.

"Anyone know if the GP WASR 10 has a threaded barrel?"

Yep. Mine had a thread protector nut on the end, covering up the threads. It was spot-welded on the underside of the barrel. I took an air compressor powered dremel and ground the weld off, then unscrewed it. The threads are backwards...counterclockwise makes it tighter, so turn it clockwise to get it off, while holding in the retainer pin.

When I first tried to take the nut off, I thought, wow this is really on here good and tight...but I was turning it the wrong way :P
