Folks: I am looking to buy my first AK47 rifle. The only problem is that there is alot of manufactures, Calibers, pricing varnaces that make it difficult on what to buy. Can anyone shed some light on what to look for, what to get, etc. I want something that is reliable, shoots straight, affordable (fun), etc.

Lots of threads, and lots of different options to answer this question. If you are looking for 1 single AK type rifle to have, I would say find a WASR no-ban with straight sights, and call it good. That is the entry level "basic" AK. Vectors are much nicer, but cost about $150 more. My recommendation is stick with the 7.62 AK, as parts, mags, and ammo are easier and mostly cheaper to aquire. I believe Atlantic Firearms offers a discount to ARFcom members, and they post pretty regularly in the EE and over here. Hope this helps.

7.62 for caliber. Vector for rifle.

+1 for 7.62 caliber.  If Russia decides to adopt another cartridge to replace the 5.45mm, the ammo could get very expensive. WASR or a used SAR1 would be a good first AK.  I'd say also if you don't mind waiting, get on a list with AIM or CenterFire Systems for one of the Century built YUGO underfolder AK's.  A much better choice than the WASR and you'll get one of the best AK's ever[ made.

After thinking about this myself and doing a lot of research, I decided on a Vector underfolder.  It has replaced my 16" Bushmaster as my favorite rifle.

Much as I love my 5.45 AK get a 7.62X39 first. Vector is said to be good Arsenal is the best out of the current AK makers.

I for one however don`t care for the 5.56 AK`s. But thats just me.

Go with something traditional looking in 7.62x39, Vector Classic, Arsenal, hell even Pre-89 guns are extremely affordable with the ban being gone. Do your research, learn why you like one over the other, take your time finding your right one.

how much is a Vector versus a WASR?

How much is 7.62 per box versus 5.56?

I spent $569 for my Vector Underfolder.
Ammo isn't that expensive in 7.62x39.  With an AK you can feel free to shoot Wolf or Silver Bear or Golden Bear or something like that.  I've fired lots of all 3, and never had a problem.

+1

I was in the same boat as you being new to AKs, I figured go with the best as I figured the cheaper ones
are exactly what you get, more so when you want some accuracy from an AK verses just blasting some rounds and you cannot even hit something at 50 yrs.

I would recommend Arsenal and 762x39.

My 2 cents.

Wow Arsenal and VEPR look good.

This VEPR is $599... looks competitively priced with the lower models....
