I've seen the Valmet thing.....but was wondering if any one had tried any "home grown" mods to minimize the denting of ejected brass (want to maximize the number of re-loads I get)

You could always shoot it with the topcover off.....

Try some single sided foam tape.

As stated above, the foam tape should help with regards to the side ding.  

You could also experiment with putting less gas through your gas system.  Ofcourse, too little and you will reduce reliability.  If you have a rifle with a non-vented gas tube, try a vented version and see how she runs.  A slightly less aggressive action should help to reduce the brass abuse a little.  I know that some guns, like my Arsenal SAM7 seem to use an obvious overkill on pressure for the gas system.  As a result, that gun is very hard on brass.
