Sat on the sidelines today during a range discussion on whether you can use 10 round AK74 mags with 7.62x39 ammo.

The proponent suggested since both rounds have similar head diameter, OAL length and very similar body taper using such a small number of rounds (10), the 7.62 could easier be used in 5.45 mags.

The opponent mentioned the body taper is still significantly different which would cause stacking issues and furthermore the feed lips are different.

Of course, no parties present for the debate had access to either mag.

What do you think?

What I think?

If the AK 47 and AK 74 used the same mags, why do they build both?

The Russians would never build both unless it was required. They are cheap and practical like that.

Understood.

Did a little digging myself and discovered that the 5.45 case is closer to the 5.56 dimension than the 7.62.
