Not new to shooting but brand new to doing all on my own.

I would personally suggest saving your money and just buy or make a few sandbags.

Get a bipod, Harris to be specific. And a rear sand bag.  You can take those on the move  with you unlike that rest thing.

Exactly what are you calling the "Army" way?

I spent 23 years as a 11B and 21B including a fair amount of time as a sniper with the M24 and M82/107. Are you referring to sandbags?

If you want something that is very transportable and light, I recommend what we called a "sniper sock". Take a sock like a boot sock, fill it about halfway with sand and tie it off at the top, Dirt cheap and very effective.
