Looking to explore the possibility and mix things up a bit here this year for deer hunting. Have a Tikka T3x in .270 WIN (bolt action). Trying to see what is out there in the semi-auto realm that is will be good for deer and up sized targets.

Savage M-10 is one semi-auto that comes to mind that could be used for precision target/and hunting.

Have any of you used semi-auto rifles for Deer/Elk hunting? If so, what. Also, share your favorites. Pictures are most welcome as always!

For here in Texas .223/5.56 works to take down the small white tail deer here. NM 6.5 of any flavor works good for the mule deer.

The poster above, awakened me to narrow my suggestion list a bit.

Lets keep the .223/5.56 out of the purview of this discussion. They are perfectly good rounds and I own several in that caliber but personally I would not prefer that round (5.56 or .223) for animals the size of deer and above.

Also, the hunt range would be anywhere from 200 to 500 yards. The rifle has to be accurate to those distances.

Thanks mate, I would hesitate to use the 5.56 for small deer at very short distances (under 150 yards) but personally dont' prefer that round for deer hunting as I think it to be a bit of a not so instant death for the animal and hence unethical in my mind. I would hesitate to use that though for heli-hunting those mofo feral pigs that keep multiplying faster than bacteria. Haven't had time to go on a hunt for those friggin' hogs/pigs yet due to work commitments but will try next year.

My primary whitetail cartridge now is a 6.5 Grendel.  I load heavy hunting bullets.
I hunt coyotes with .556 with good results but they are much easier to kill than deer.
Year after year, I brought down deer with a .250-3000, but I have had a few great hits fail to bring them down.
One shot tore through the top of both lungs, bounced around a bit, followed the spine all the way down his body and ended up in the near side hip.
It was then that I decided that that cartridge was too light for whitetail.
170gr. 30-30 stops them immediately.

.22 is the most fun though.  Groundhogs and Raccoons drop like flies all day long.

Well our deer here about about 150-200 max. Yet a 6.5 of any type does a lot better. My brother has taken deer here with a 30.06 yet I cannot do that recoil thus the 6.5 Grendel for me For the mule deer in NM that I saw a shit load of when I was at my parents place yeah perfect shot would work yet I would use my Grendel.

I use a 6.8SPC for deer and have used in for bigger hogs in TX. Both my boys used theirs for deer at 250+ yards. I have a 6.5G that ballistically should generate 1000’lbs past 400yds, was hoping to use for Antelope but missed out on a tag this year. It will get used for deer and likely a cow elk.

6.8 SPC is the smallest I've used for deer.

I've killed 2 deer and 1 hog with it.  All were 1 shot kills and DRT.

I'm leaning towards 6.5G this year, though.

For deer 6.5g out of 12" AR.  Hogs too but lately I've reverted back to 5.45 for them

I use 6.8 SPC, I just swap uppers and magazines on my AR15 and I'm good to go.

Lot of people around me use SKSs for deer hunting.

7.62 LR308.  Two elk taken with it, quick kills.

But it is a heavy beast.  16” bbl, Loaded with optic near 10.5 lbs.
Not horrible till you start really climbing at 9k feet.    I need to get rid of it and try a gen 2.  Really accurate though.

Going out on a limb and assuming you aren't taking such long shots that you really need an extra 20 grains of powder, then rather than lug around the extra weight of an AR10 pattern rifle, I'd do an AR15 variant with a >.223 bullet.  6.5, 6.8, etc..  .300BO is an option, but bullet selection becomes a bit trickier.

I started hunting with a HK91 in .308 back in the mid 70's. Added a first gen Aimpoint, which I still have.

I then moved to a Rem 700 in .30-06. Then a Win 94 in .30-30. Then a AR15 in 6.8. Last few years, an AR pistol in 5.56.

I'm moving back to the 6.8 with a red dot. I got most of my deer with a red dot and self loading action because I could see the target point and didn't have to mess with the action or reloading it to keep that red dot on the target for a second shot. Best practice. Everything else was a distraction or not adequate for an accurate shot. Red dots rule.

Thats partially my goal. Want a semi automatic so that I do not have to mess with the action in case I need to put in a follow up shots.

AR-15 and AR-10 are going to be the top dogs.

The LWRC 6.8 SPC II with special 6.8 Magpul mags seems like a perfect light semi-auto hunting rifle to me. Most don't hunt past a few hundred yards, so it's popular with hunters.

And of course if you do want to hunt a little further out you might want to look into an AR15 in 6.5 Grendel.

My primary hunting rifle is a Browning BAR short trac in 300 WSM with a desert tan stock and forearm.

I get more bang flop dead deer with it than any other caliber I've used to hunt deer including 30-06, 308, 25-06, 44 mag and a 50 cal muzzle loader.  With its semi auto gas system, it has about the same recoil as my bolt action .308, which is very mild.

My father-in-law hunted with one for years.  Nice rifle overall.  Buds has .30-06 BAR's in stock, I don't know what other calibers they still offer it in.  Knew a guy that had one in .300 win mag.  He got a pretty good case of scope eye once when we were hunting in the eastern part of the state.

Good pointers on the Browning BAR. Looking to explore the one in .300 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum), anyone shot any in the caliber?

I don't hunt with semis. Waaaay too heavy. And I usually only use one bullet.

This year I'm hunting with a Kimber Alpine Ascent in 6.5 CM. Ultralight.

If I did... Something in 6.5 CM.

I know, do not prefer semi-autos for hunting but just exploring the idea of carrying something different.

6.5 CM seems like a good alternative to the .308 semi-autos but I haven’t seen a 6.5 CM semi-auto in a non-AR platform.

What is that shiny lever-action you got there. I myself bought a 45-70 Winchester 1886 lightly used one. Haven’t got it yet. Excited to shoot it . Will be my first lever gun. z

Springfield Armory is making a 6.5 Creedmoor M1A.  I believe Fulton's Armory might as well.

I like the 6.5 CM option in the M1A but do not like the composite stock model which is the only one available. If going M1A then it has to be the classic Walnut stock
