A couple of 6.5s on the right and my savage .308 for kicks. It's the gun that started it all for me. And a whole lot of pst scopes. Tomorrow I'm going out to test them out. Can't wait to throw the cans on them.

This is the gap you are going to get with pretty much any handguard other than the Samson/Rainier Evo handguards.

I have to say, it's very disappointing, and a pretty piss poor design. They should have made the rail that bolts onto the action have a shroud that covers the barrel nut, so that you actually could use another handguard without the ridiculous gap.

Yup someone will come out with one or the rail manufacturers will make rails specifically for the RPR, when there is a need the market will fill it.

Or just a nut that would allow standard handguards to fit correctly

I plan on putting a BAR nut (modified of course) with a 15" handguard. Should be nice, tight and flush. I'll post pics when done.

Called that as soon as I saw the parts diagram.  Others are right though, if there is a need the market will offer a solution.  Still it's kind of disappointing because people "in the know" touted the interchangeability...

Some people won't be bothered by the gap. The interchangeability is there just with a hiccup. I'm sure it'll all get figured out rather quickly.

So I just got off the phone with Seekins and had a very nice and helpful technical conversation about the SP3R rail. It may just work. Their rail extends .25" back beyond their barrel nut which may be enough to cover the Ruger barrel nut. He talked me through the design and I can see how it just might work. He actually said Ruger was looking at their rail as well but decided to go with the Samson.

I may just give this one a shot, although I need to wait a few weeks to let my bank account recover.

ETA: I won't be able to get to my rifle for a bit. Can anyone measure the distance from the top of the picatinny rail to the bottom of the RUGER barrel nut (The one closest to receiver? Thanks.

Okay, this is the last time I take this thing apart.

The Geissele barrel nut fit the .308 barrel by a hair.  The rail still will not clear the ruger barrel nut through, too bad because I like this rail soooooooo much more.

Geissele barrel nut threaded all the way onto the barrel:

Geissele rail installed.  You can see the wings contact the RPR's barrel nut and prevent the rail's installation.

These pics show the wing from a different angle so you can see it contacting the RPR's barrel nut.  The width of the wing would be as far back as the rail would time so the screws would meet the Geissele barrel nut's screw grooves.  That would leave a gap the width of the barrel nut's splines between the rail and receiver.

Does the geissele rail just use a clamp system to keep it in place? If so, that would be super easy to make it fit right.

Measure the distance from the front of the receiver to the front of the nut, like .150 or so, and chuck the rail vertically in the mill, ditch the wings first, and plunge everything that would keep the top rails from mating. Basically remove everything but the top rail and the solid area below it.

Looks like there's needs to be a custom spacer to be a go between the two.  Then most rails could fit.

This is disappointing.   ...for those who want variation

No, the rail times to the nut and then the set screws on the wings add stability by tightening to the receiver. Take a look at the third picture and you can see the bolt holes on the lower part of the rail.  Those bolt holes match the groove pattern on the barrel nut (also seen in the 3rd picture).

i got to fondle one at a local store today. they were keeping a 308 on hand for display, taking orders on all 3 calibers. he said if he'd had them on hand, they would have already sold 30+ 6.5 creedmoors. i have to say, i was very impressed. i think i'm gonna pick one up.

My prediction is MI will be the first to make a rail for the Ruger. As I understand the system, if one made the barrel nut and handguard nut as one piece, unique to that handguard, it would work?

Dam that looks sweet. Ruger hit a home run with these. You can bet the other gun makers aren't sitting by watching Ruger eat there lunch. Will be interesting to see how others follow. Love the competition.

It wouldn't be that hard to make a barrel nut that doesn't have the teeth and is threaded all the way to the receiver with holes to use a spanner wrench to install it. That would allow any ar handguard nut (that fits over the barrel) to thread all the way back and remove the gap. Although some rails like the Geissele still won't work because of the wings that need to fit around the receiver. The ruger PR receiver looks too wide to fit inside the wings. That's a shame because I bought a 15in blemished Geissele MK4 specifically for when I get a Ruger PR.

Definitely not that particular rail, I think about the NSR though and it just uses holes drilled in the rail to attach to the threaded holes in the barrel nut. I wonder if a guy could get away with moving those holes in the rail a bit and removing some material from the rear to make it work. I have a buddy that should be picking up his RPR this weekend, I'll see if he will let me give that a look.

It would work, but given that the nut would probably not be timed correctly, you might end up w/ your top rail @ something like 1:37 instead of TDC.

A guy could get fancy and chuck the nut up in a lathe and cut new grooves in exactly the right spot after milling the rear of the rail. If you really wanted to make it work.

Not so sure with the 6.5.  338 Lapua is better, but the 700WM is easier to handle, as well as cheaper, both factory and reloaded.

I took the .308 RPR to the range today to see how I could do with the rifle.  I only have two bolt guns, a 1903-A4 and this RPR, and I've only shot the 03-A4 once, so I certainly understand I need to practice my basics.  It was a nice sunny day with temps in the low 90's, humidity probably at 65% and a light breeze (5mph) in my face.

The range is nothing fancy and limited to 100 yards. I had pre-cleaned the rifle and I brought my cleaning equipment with me. I fired one shot and cleaned; I did not notice any copper fouling, only carbon.  I fired another shot and did the same with no copper fouling noted.  I fired three rounds and cleaned and found no evidence of copper fouling so I stopped cleaning and focused on firing.

I was shooting from a bench and shot two fouling rounds and then began 5-shot strings at a leisurely pace. I used the first string making adjustments to stock and trying to settle in.  I fired three additional strings and was pretty much at 1 to 1.5 MOA but I really wasn't comfortable with my positioning behind the rifle.

I switched to prone and fired 8 more strings.  I did better but I still has some issues with consistency and a natural point of aim. I think I need a better optic too since my $135 Mueller doesn't have the clarity my old eyes need.

I have to say I really like this rifle, the ergonomics fit me well and the trigger is really smooth out-of-the-box. I think the accuracy will improve as I improve and certainly this rifle will shoot better than me.  Ruger RPR with Harris Bipod in a LaRue mount with a Mueller 5.5-25x50 in a LaRue mount firing Federal Premium .308 Winchester 168gr Sierra Matchking BTHPs.

Looking downrange, you can just see the targets on the 100 yard line:

RANGE REPORT

Today was a tough day for shooting for groups. Temps were in the low 90s, although humidity was a reasonable 50%. It was bright and sunny, although I prefer somewhat overcast. Mirage wasn't terrible and both optics were shot at 12-15X. Accuracy of the Ruger sucked ass at first, much worse than previously. After a few groups, I realized it was due to the AAC Brakeout 2.0 muzzle brake. Luckily I had the tool with me, so I removed it and accuracy greatly improved. The groups below are with the brake off.

I did 5 groups for 5 shots each for record. I was initially going to submit these to the MOA challenge, however I didn't do as well as expected with either rifle. I'm not blaming the rifles for the results, the weather was poor for shooting groups. I don't do well in heat and was completely soaked in sweat by the end of the day. Still, the results were not what I would call "bad".

And the winner is:

Obviously this picture was taken of another rifle, but same barrel company. Seriously though the barrel characteristics made the difference and I will explain why.

The AR came out ahead today. I was hoping for better groups than this as I have had excellent accuracy with this load of 77 TMK over 8208. During sight in and load development, I had several groups at .25, although not consistently. At 500 yards, I was able to hit a 6" steel target with ease. Although I've only had this barrel a few months and have only taken it to 500 once. The wind was calm that day. Even though it didn't do quite as well as I was hoping for, it still pulled out a very respectable .559 MOA average over 5 groups:

The Ruger actually the smallest groups of the day, however they were not consistent due to heat. Obviously a 6.5 creedmoor will heat up a barrel quicker than a .223, however once the Ruger's barrel got hot, it stayed hot. The accuracy was also more affected by heat than the Krieger on the AR. The Krieger continued to have the same accuracy whether hot or cold and held a relatively consistent POI. The Ruger's groups definitely opened up with heat. The two smallest groups were the ones where I gave the barrel a significant amount of time to cool down. If I shot a second or third group immediately afterwards, it was very evident on paper. I'm inclined to believe this has to do with residual stress from the hammer forging process vs single point cut rifling, but that's just a guess. Still, the fact that I'm comparing a Ruger barrel to a Krieger gives evidence to how good this rifle really is. I shot factory Hornady 120 grain Amax today. The rifle actually likes 140 grain amax more, but I didn't want to waste the few I have at 100 yards. Also a .596 MOA average is not exactly something to be disappointed about, especially considering it was really just one group that screwed it up:

I am still not happy with the Samson rail. Last night I remounted it and made sure it was perfectly centered. After a day of shooting off a preloaded bipod, it is now canted upwards and to the side. I will be ordering a Seekins and doing whatever I can to get it to work next week. I will be looking for another muzzle device as well as the AAC affects accuracy too much. I'm considering removing the one off my AR in case it may have been affecting it as well.
