Take the Vietnam era collectors or even the big m40 collectors for example, they all got in at the right time when stuff was rather plentiful and affordable. I missed that train but recognize the one we are all riding right now. When I see people painting their original MK13-5 chassis's or when they add paint to their 13-0 stocks it lessens the long term value tremendously as you are erasing the original patina and history of the item - its similar but not as offensive as the people who bought up original issued m40a1 smear stocks and had them cut and bed for other actions, inletted for different bottom metals and added flush cups. I can understand how they thought that was exciting at the time. |

Do you ever think of matching the paint on some of the painted kits you've got? |

The SSA is a great organization and all the funds raised from this raffle will be used to support the USMC sniper community (lots of gear and supplies gets send to active duty and deployed units!). The drawing for this raffle is going to be held on March 17th (03/17, the USMC Scout Sniper MOS), I wish best of luck to all those who participate! Please let me know if you have any questions about the raffle, rifle or the SSA. Here's a link to the SSA's website, it has all the raffle rifle information and a some great photos of the gun! | Does anyone have any pics they will share of ANY markings or engaving that would have been on the MK13 mod 0 and mod 3? Anything on the bolts mainly. RWS is doing both mine and he says he has pretty good pics but I want to be as helpful as possible. Sounds like they are getting close. I dont even remember when I started collecting the parts for those. Has to have been at least 3-4 years ago. |

Decided my Mk13 Mod5 needed a sibling - fresh from Stiller for a Mod7 build: Attached File |
Well, gentlemen, Rob just finished his first video with this astonishing rifle! This M40 is extremely rare and historically significant, which makes this a very unique YouTube video (I don't think there's any other YouTube videos showing a review of an original M40)! Rob does an amazing job shooting and explaining each shot. The shots that are close in (100 yards to 400 yards) have a hold under, the zero distance is 500 yards and the further shots (600 yards to 700+ yards) have a hold over. Rob even shows the target with a reticle overlay that shows his approximate reticle hold position. This is the perfect way to convey how the USMC Scout Snipers in Vietnam were making their shots at various distances.![]() $100K Sniper Rifle: Authentic USMC M40! Major Dick Culver's USMC M40 ?? This is just the first M40 video, we're currently working on a second video that will have some more shooting, a breakdown of all the parts on the rifle (including some nice close-up shots so that the viewer can see everything Rob is discussing in detail), and hopefully an interview with the president of the Scout Sniper Association (Tim Parkhurst)! We decided to split the videos, since some people will only be interested in the shooting, and others will enjoy the more technical aspects and parts breakdown. The M40 series if sniper rifles has been with the Marine Corps for about 57 years, and it's time is finally coming to an end. Unfortunately, the Scout Sniper 0317 MOS is also being removed from the Corps. These M40 videos are a salute to this legendary rifle and to those who used it! We will eventually film the rest of the M40xx series, but we also want to balance the channel with other interesting rifles in order to keep things interesting. The Scout Sniper Association has also asked for copies of all our M40xx videos to add to their Scout Sniper archives so that this information can be preserved for future generations. We really hope that you guys like this video and please stay tuned for the follow-up M40 video! I'm also sending Rob a mystery rifle this week, he got to pick out the M40, so now it's my turn to pick out a rifle! Once he wraps up the 2nd M40 video, he'll have a new rifle in hand and he can start filming asap. We're not filming any of the rifles on a linear time-line in which they were issued, so we'll be jumping around between vintage rifles and modern rifles. You guys have seen some of the rifles in my collection, so feel free to let us know if there's a specific rifle you'd like to see and we'll try to make any requests a priority for filming! I'm trying to get guns out to Rob as fast as he can film them, but we also want to keep the content high quality, so filming/editing can take some time to do. Also, Rob's channel is NOT monetized, everything we're doing comes out of our own pockets, we don't make a single penny off of these videos. We make these videos because we enjoy it! It's a great opportunity to preserve and share this American military history, instead of just letting these rifles gather dust while hidden away is some long forgotten collection. We hope you guys are enjoying the videos as much as we are! |

I believe they are all sold out already. As hard as they are to find and I wanted one. I couldn’t bring myself to spend $400 on just a bolt handle. I also picked a generic 700 l/a bolt handle for my m24a2. Do we have anyone who can refinish them to proper finish? Although I hope to rattle can mine when done so it probably won’t matter to much. |

I have an extra M marked bolt if anyone’s interested. Also, I was talking with RWS today about my build and he can refinish it in the correct dry gun lube or blue it. Talking to him yesterday, he can do everything from the build to proper markings on barrel, receiver and bolt. He said just throw everything in a box and he’ll take care of the rest. Just need to pick up a stock, trigger and bolt internals. |

Another recommendation for Robert Snyder at RWS! He's not just a good friend, but he has also built some of my rifles (to include an extremely rare XM110 prototype). He does fantastic work, has a pretty quick turnaround time and truly listens to what his customers want for their build. Even though Chris Higgins does all of my Mk13's, I'll still send builds to RWS (have an M24 getting ready to go out to him). I use certain gunsmiths for certain types of builds, so RWS fills certain niches. Other people have him build all of their clones. Just look at what you want to be built and choose the best expert for the job, I'd easily go with RWS for any type of M24 clone. In regards to shipping, it's just a necessary part of the game. My recommendation is to ship all long guns via USPS Registered Mail (with the Priority speed, not First Class). USPS Registered Mail is by far the best and safest way to mail a rifle! Each box is put into a special and locked Registered Mail bag, and everyone who comes in contact with the Registered Mail bag is required by USPS to sign for the bag, which creates a solid chain of custody for the shipped items. There's no way anything can get lost or stolen, it's pretty much impossible for anything bad to happen (unless the truck is on fire or something). There's also 2 shipping speed options, Priority and First Class. Don't be a miser, just pay the extra $10 or whatever, and send the package with Priority speed! With Registered Priority, the package will get to it's final destination in a few days, as opposed to a few weeks with the other option (First Class or ground or whatever they call the other option). Most people selling and shipping a rifle are cheap assholes who always choose the absolute cheapest and slowest shipping option. However, Registered Mail is actually the cheapest option you can ship with at USPS, even with the extra few bucks for the fast Priority option! Regular USPS Priority Mail only has up to $5,000 in insurance available, whereas the Registered Mail has limited insurance. To put it in perspective, it was cheaper to send 3 M40 scopes to my friend via Registered Mail with $10,000 insurance (shipping cost was only $63), then it was to send another friend a Mk13 Mod 5 kit with $1,500 insurance via regular Priority Mail (about $110). The boxes were the same size and almost the same weight because I sent the 3 scopes in one of the Mod 5 cases for extra protection. I also sent my original USMC M40 sniper rifle to Rob (he made the M40 youtube video is a few posts up this page, Vintage Rifles Shooters Club) with $100,000 insurance via Registered Mail, and it only cost me $322! That seems like a ton of money in shipping, but if I had taken the same rifle to my FFL to have them ship it with that much insurance, the price would have been over $1k. Shipping a package using Registered Mail takes a little bit longer to box up, but it's not too bad once you get used to it. USPS requires shippers to only use the paper/gum tape and to seal every exposed seam on the box (you'll want to do more than just tape up the seams, give the box plenty of tape like you would with the plastic shipping tape). There's plenty of ways to wet the paper tape and apply it to the package. The cheapest method is to use a cup of water with a sponge or to use a spray bottle with water. I ship a ton of expensive items via Registered Mail, so the best option for me was to purchase a pretty expensive electronic paper tape dispensing machine. Just do whatever works best for you, there's no wrong answers. The paper tape actually adheres to a cardboard box far better than the heavy duty plastic tape. Also, remember to get the paper tape with the string in it, it's even stronger than plain old paper tape. I have a way of taping up a box that seems like overkill, but it works and the package is solid! Paper/gum tape is required by USPS so that they can stamp every edge of the tape with a tamper-proof date stamp. It's part of the Registered Mail security plan. My point is that shipping firearms around the country can be expensive and worrisome, but there is a method that alleviates these concerns. Ship all of your rifles and other long guns via USPS Registered Mail with Priority speed! It will save you a ton of money and your package is 100% accounted for at all times. It doesn't get better than that when it comes to shipping a firearm! Whenever I ship pistols out, I just go through my FFL and take the hit, since there's just no good way to ship a pistol. So, if you want a cheaper/more secure option when sending your expensive/rare parts to an out of state gunsmith, remember to ship everything with USPS Registered Mail (with the Priority option)! I hope this information is useful, please let me know if anyone has any questions. I've been using Registered Mail frequently over the past year and I wish that I had started using it sooner! Once you make the switch in shipping methods and get used to the tape, you'll also wish you had started shipping this way a lot sooner! |

So valuable Thanks for sharing all of that! I'm glad that my post was useful! For a long time I absolutely dreaded shipping anything expensive. Now I'm able to send out anything in my collection without any worries. It sucks that regular USPS Priority Mail tops out at $5k insurance, that is a major constraint for collectors like us. Just look through this very thread to see how much money people are shipping back and forth at any given time. All Stiller Mk13 receivers cost over $3k right now (the Wylie ones are even more), so just a receiver will eat up 60%+ of the maximum $5k Priority Mail insurance. Shipping a Stiller receiver, a Mk13 chassis kit (Mod 5 or Mod 7), an XTSP trigger (or insanely expensive Geissele Mk13 trigger) and a Lilja barrel blank, all in an original Storm Case, will need a lot more than the maximum $5k insurance! People outside our hobby have no idea how expensive these detailed clone builds actually are. Just looking through this thread, the average clone build is worth quite a bit and almost everyone needs to mail out their build at some point. If Registered Mail isn't used, then people run into the issue of maxing out the insurance, which then leads to shipping a box that's more expensive than the declared insurance or splitting the items up into multiple boxes. It's even worse if you have to ship a single item that's worth more than the $5k insurance limit (M73B2 scope, for example), you can't just cut it up and send it in multiple packages. And even if you do split items up into other boxes, that drastically increases the shipping costs. Collectors like us don't really have a choice, we need to send out parts out to certain gunsmiths in order to have the best clone we can possibly build. It's just a part of the hobby we need to deal with. Everyone in this thread has expensive builds that will easily max out the USPS Priority Mail $5k insurance limit, so it's a major issue for us, it's not an isolated incident. I hope everyone reading this will take the time to do a little bit of research into the USPS Registered Mail option, it's something that will benefit every collector/clone builder in this thread! Like I said in my previous post, there's many ways to wet the paper tape and an expensive option is not required (but can be useful). I started out using a glass of water with a sponge, then I moved up to using a simple $20 tape dispenser that has a water reservoir and roller on it. This is the one I used for a while: QILIMA Desktop Tape Dispenser,Water Activated Tape Dispenser,Green,12.6in Gum Tape Dispenser Sealing Office Supplies https://a.co/d/2pM6fnM After a few month of using this device, I decided that I needed something easier and faster to use. Unfortunately, when upgrading a tape dispenser, you also drastically increase the price. There's some nice devices for a few hundred dollars, but I wanted something that I could just hit a button on and have the machine do the rest. After some research, this is what I ended up buying: Better Pack 555eS Electronic Paper Tape Dispenser (BET555E) https://a.co/d/bQkEQQO I was hesitant with dropping over $1k on a tape machine, but after using it for a few days the machine proved to be a great investment! It saves me a ton of time and I'm able to get very long strips of tape (which can be difficult to do with other methods). This device isn't for everyone, but I'm shipping a lot more stuff than the average collector and I needed something that would save me a ton of time. Unless you guys are spending a few hours each day or every few days boxing up valuable items, this device isn't for you. There's a spectrum of paper tape dispensing devices out there, so choose the best one according to your own needs. |

Speaking of RWS. Got the email yesterday these are ready. Chris Higgins unfucked my mod 5. Beautiful work. These two went to RWS. My M24A2 was built by someone else. Honestly I don’t know who. Attached File Attached File |

That mod3(?) is probably my dream rifle. I just wish the parts were more obtainable? I keep telling myself it’s not do able but maybe I’ll change my mind after the m24a2. Thanks for all the shipping info, that’s a big help. I’ve had a few things lost in the mail from lowers to a complete rifle and even some parts from people in this thread earlier in the year. Do you have to declare it as a firearm using this process? My local p/o is a pain to deal with so I might venture to a different store when I go through this all. While I’m at it how many mags do you all recommended getting for some of these rifles where it may be difficult to obtain parts in the future? Usually I try to keep between 6-10 per gun and like 30 for common ar’s bug with some of these mags fetching $90+ it’s a little different game. I’m thinking at least 3, use one or two and store the third but would hate for my kids to not be able to enjoy it in 50 years should one get damaged. I’m not a high volume shooter or plan to run competitions with it but would like to take a class or two with it to learn to shoot l/r. |

I sold an extra barrel collar for a mod 3 not too long ago. I have not seen a return stock for sale in a long time but I have not been looking. RWS was going to ship those back via UPS. It freaked me out a little bit so I stopped them and requested registered mail. I know its a pain in the ass but I told them I would pay for the extra time to package them. After all this time I would be sick if they got lost or stolen. They were insuring them for 6k each but I doubt I could replace them for that. I am not sure though. Kinda want to paint the mod 3. |

Just a point of clarification, I always hear people refer to the original Mk13 McMillan stocks as "return stocks." This isn't correct at all and it stems from calling the M40A1 stocks "return stocks," since the A1 stocks were actually returned to McMillan. None of the 155 original Mk13 McMillan stocks I had were ever sent back to McMillan, so it's impossible for them to be "return stocks." It's more correct to call them DRMO stocks, since they were never returned back to McMillan after leaving the military. Well, one stock went back to McMillan, I gave Kelly McMillan a beautiful painted kit as a gift for signing the certificates of authenticity for me. I see this term posted on the forums and I try to correct it whenever I can. McMillan had nothing to do with the DRMO'd stocks, except for Kelly McMillan signing the certificates (which I designed, wrote, and had printed). The certificates, sorting stocks and parts, matching up painted parts, selling, and shipping the stocks was done entirely by me. It was a pretty large undertaking, since I did everything from a small apartment in Chicago, lol. |

I guess I just picked that phase up from the internet. Everyone refers to previously issued items as return which as you stated is technically not correct. Like the 2 SPR uppers I have that were " returned " to PRI vs others that were DRMO. I remember reading your story about the certificates years ago on snipershide I think. I have a question whle I am posting. Why were MOD 3 bolts marked with " MK13 MOD 3 " and an anchor? Was it just an aesthetics thing or was there a specific reason? As of today both guns are on their way back registered mail. Its kinda funny. I have a mod 0, mod 3, mod 5 , and m24a2. I have never shot a bolt gun in my life yet. Just never have the time. Last 2 classes I took I used my K1 and urgi. We have 22 acres but that is just not big enough to be blasting 300WM. |

| About to pick up a PST013 stock here soon. I hear a lot about the webbing on the stock. Get it, don’t get, sand it off, yada yada yada. When I asked the gentleman at HS Precision about it he was kinda dumbfounded I would even consider getting it without the webbing. I’ve seen both throughout this thread and I thought the issued stocks had the webbing. What’s everyone’s $.02 on this? Thanks. |
