I recently acquired a Winchester Model 70 from a family member and I`m looking for load advice.
Thanks
Edit:  I asked for 100 & 117 Gr loads because that`s what I currently have on hand.
All advice will be appreciated regardless of bullet weight.

My best load is a Ken Waters pet load also referenced in Modern Reloading (Lee manual) with a max loading of 46.0 with a 120gr bullet.
I found it very accurate with mild pressure signs. Best thing is it kills deer.

.257 Roberts +P Winchester case
117gr Sierra Gameking BT
43gr H4831SC
CCI 250 Magnum primer
COL 2.8 inches
2746-2769fps from my Rem 700SA

Eta: 0.65 inch 5 shot group

For varmint load. Reference Lee Modern Reloading 44.0gr

.257 Roberts +P Winchester case
Hornady 75gr V-Max
43-44gr H4895
WLR Primer
COL 2.81 inch
3515-3549fps, 0.8-0.95 inch 100yd 5 shot groups.

I have had good luck with RL17 and IMR4831 using 100 and 110 grain bullets.

Are these Plus P rounds or are you just using that case?
Gun dates from 1939 so I dont want to push it too hard.
Thanks for the info!

Are you sure it'sa model 70? Model 70 will handle them, converted 96 Mauser, maybe not. But I'll look up the pressures. Be back shortly.

Addendum: Yes both are ok. First reference load is 53,360psi and the varmint load reference is 54,868psi. 30-06 pressures run up to 60k psi.

If you are reloading, the Lee Modern Reloading manual is an incredible resource. And not expensive.

I always used IMR 4064 for my Model 70 featherweight. Hodgdon's website has data.

Positive.  Been in my wife`s family since the 40`s.  Serial 23XXX.
Came with a period correct Weaver 330 3X scope and mount.
List I found said it was made in 39.

Thanks.  I will check it out.  I have loaded pistol rounds for years but I`m just getting started on loading for rifles.
