Is a 77 gr bullet at 2900 fps from a 24" barrel bolt action unreasonable?  Sierra TMK or Berger OTM.

24 inch barrel it could be possible . IMI razor core 77 OTM 5.56 I have personally recoded velocity of over 2800 FPS from my 20 inch criterion barrel with a magneto speed.

Should be easily attainable, but a 75 ELD at the same speed is a better option for distance.

Shoot 80s out of a bolt gun. 77s are designed to conform to AR mag lengths. You can load 80s to the lands in a bolt gun, and get more powder in there. That said, 2900 is a tall order. The higher BC of the 80s will mean you won't need to run them as fast though.

2800 from a 20" AR isn't too difficult with H4895. Just need a thicker primer. The extra 4" of barrel ought to do the rest.

Western Powder shows loads that speed in their manual w/ a 24" barrel for both TAC and 2520.

How long can you load before engaging the rifling? Will a round, loaded at that length, fit and feed from the magazine?

You may be able to get that velocity loading long and using RE-15, VihtaVuori N150, VihtaVuori N540 or H4895. Chasing velocity for the sake of velocity is foreign to me. Look for the smallest groups as you climb the ladder, you'll probably end up using them in the end.

I ran 75 grain JLK VLD's at Camp Perry once @ 2930 fps from a 26" barrel. 23.5 grains of VihtaVuori N540 and seated to touch the lands. Performance at 600 was less than I had hoped for, 193 if I recall.

VLD profile bullets have less bearing surface by design and can be driven faster because of it. I had to load these one at a time, so magazine function wasn't considered at the time.

Checked my notes, and 2860fps is very accurate from my 24” with 75 eld’s. We’ve gotten them up to 3100 from a 26”, but the load was backed down to just over 3025.

80’s can hit 2950 with a 26”, so I’d guess they could also hit 2900ish from a 24”.

As stated before, the IMI LR mod 0 77’s are fast. I’m getting 2820fps from my 18” barrel.

I run 77 TMK at 2.32" at 3000 from a 30" bolt gun.

23.5 gr  8208. Work up, over book load but long

seated.

In a Savage model 12 with a 1:7 twist, the standard Black Hills ammo with the 77 OTM and the 77 TMK both go just a little over 2900.

24 H4895 and Hornady 75 BTHP @ 2900. Accurate in the Tikka 24" Varmint. I'm sure I could've gone higher, but no need.

Thanks everyone...  I've "done it".  XBR8208 and Berger 77gr OTM Tactical.  2920 fps with no pressure signs, and 5/8" @ 200 yds suppressed.  Doesn't get much better!

I didn't see this thread initially but i run a 75 at 2970 out of my 21"   Ive been to 300 with an 80 and my brass is fine.  I just need a good load to stay under the tac speed limit in PRS.

The 75 ELD smokes pretty much every other 75-77 class bullet in BC and that really shows up down range.

I got 2705 Magneto speed chronoed out of my 16" Colt barrel AR with mixed LC brass and Sierra 77 MK loaded to 2.26.  That was with the max published charge of Tac for 5.56.

I could have pushed it a little more.  8 more inches of barrel ought to get the next 200 feet.
