I reload for a 6.5 creedmoor in a thompson center compass rifle.

I recently loaded up some 140gr RDFs at 2800 FPS muzzle velocity.

Today I had the chance to shoot at what I guestimated at 1000 yards, give or take.

I punched the numbers into Strelok and came up with 110 clicks up. This didn't even register a splash anywhere near my target.

So, I started clicking down, I got to where I was at 50 clicks up from zero and I was still hitting high. I ended up at 40 clicks up and I was pegging the rock at 1000 yards pretty easily.

My question is: How was strelok so wrong?

140gr RDF, .65 BC at 2800 FPS. 1/4 MOA clicks on the scope. Zero at 100 yards.

Well are you any good at estimating range? Rough numbers I plugged into my calculator say 1000 yards would be about 8.32 Mils come-up. What was your Air Density ?

2800 fps is pretty snazzy. What is your load and barrel length ?

Load is 41.5gr RL17 at 2.900" oal. Starline brass. It's a hot load for sure.

I paced off a 250 yard land mark. This was far beyond triple that distance. Maybe I should pace off the 1000 yard object. Lol.

Even if i completely estimated wrong, my calculator says 37 clicks to 500 yards. That would put my bullet drop about right for half the distance I was estimating. I'm not that bad, i think.

No way you are getting 2800fps from a 140gr out of a 22" barrel. I would say more of mid 2650. How far is your scope above bore. Atmospherics? Altitude? Scope?

No way 10 MOA is even getting you close to a 1000 yards. You would have to have a MV of 4150fps to have 10 MOA for 1000yds.

I get the same as you, which translates out to 26.3 Moa @1000 @ 2800 fps.........40.7 Moa @1300 yards @2800fps...

thats at 75*, 29.5 Hg, 1500 ft elevation and 56% humidity...

At 2350fps I get 39.4MOA @1000...

OP needs a quality range finder or tape measure..OP if you have an I-phone get the app "Virtual Measuring Tape..." its free, and it works from inches, to yards, to miles.....at least you will be closer enough to get correct dial ups.....

I recently downloaded a distance app. Works good.  I haven't been back to the same place to see how far the original target was.  It's quite possible I was off on my estimate.

2800 fps is what my chronograph had consistently told me for this load out of this rifle.

Lol Strelok isn't wrong you are. Garbage in Garbage out. Once you start getting out there you need accurate data.

Before getting a range finder I used GPS and google maps if I had a decent landmark. That worked pretty good. You can't really walk off or even physically measure those distances because the ground isn't flat enough.  Good rangefinders are inexpensive.

Get yourself at least a decent thermometer to get ambient temp at your location. A rough *station pressure, accurate MV, exact zero at 100 and you should do much better with predicted drops.

You were off by quite a bit.

10MOA comeup from 100yd zero won't get you to 1k yards.

2800 is moving quick, but even so, your range estimation is off.

I've got an MOA scope on my gas gun (22" krieger w/ 140eldm@2750fps).  I'm pretty sure I needed two+ full revolutions of the turret at 12MOA/revolution.

Someone mentioned google maps as a way to get distance.

So, I got on google maps, clicked my position at the time, and the rock I think I was shooting at.

It was about 533 yards...

I was way off. Guess that comes with experience and proper tools.

Chronograph is always at the end of the concrete at the range. 15 or so feet.

Very common. People are horrible unless they’ve actually practiced with a way to confirm. Laser rangefinders are great for practicing.
