I shot a 21/50 at 50 yards using iron sights and my 50 yard iron sight targets (NRA-sized aiming black + center dot per game's spec).

For this first trial run, I had only 5 targets up and fired 5 shots on each, two times over (10 shots/target).

Surprisingly, once you are behind that rear aperture, you can easily see the aiming black AND the little white dot in the middle, even while focused on the front sight.

Yeah, it was fun.

Well I went to the range yesterday just to try to sight in the Athlon scope.  It was cold and windy, so I only shot one 5 round magazine and then packed up and went home.

I had bore sighted using a Leupold illuminated prism bore sighter that sticks to the muzzle with a magnet.  I had installed an EGW 20 moa mounting rail (and it looks like Savage contracts with EGW for the stock rail).b  Anyhow I took my first shot at 25 yards from a bench with no stool to sit on and it was pretty close to center but about 6 inches low.  I cranked it up to about where i thought it should be and shot the remaining 4 rounds out of the magazine, and three of them were touching.  This was using federal auto match, in cold, windy conditions, with no rear bag and just leaning on the bench because there was nothing to sit on.

I think it's possible my accuracy issues that cropped up after shooting my first 25 yard tack driver target might have been caused by the scope, rings or mount I had been using.   I was surprised at how close the last three rounds grouped given the conditions, but I might have just gotten lucky.  I'm excited to go out and shoot some more on a calmer, warmer day.

After 7+ years I managed to see this for the first time a couple days ago. How fun!!

I shot one today at 25 yards but didn't take pictures of the rifle and range etc. This is fun and look forward to putting some effort into getting one cleared.

This is my first bolt .22 and only the second time I got to shoot it.

Temp 30*
Wind 10mph from the right
Distance 25 yds
Rifle CZ 457 .22LR
Ammo CCI SV

Kids were texting about pizza or something while this was going on and it was cold and windy. There, got the excuses out of the way.

Thanks for keeping this alive for 7 years so I would finally see it lol

This is going to be fun at all the distances. Don't know if the CCI SV is good enough or if better ammo will be required.

Has anyone cleared one of these with SV?

The 100 yard target is 1 MOA.  That will be tough with 22LR.

I only shoot standard velocity (SV) ammo but none of it is by CCI.

I'll be making another run at this some time this month, if I can get my hardware act together with this new scope.

Yeah get your gear together, warm weather is coming soon.

Best I've done with CCI SV in a stock 10/22 was between 2-2.5 moa.

Just have to shoot and see what happens.

I'm going to try to hit the range again this weekend if it isn't too windy.  I'm bringing a solid rest that will really hold the rifle in place to try to see how much of the group size is me, and how much is the rifle/ammo.  I never tested this gun in a rest with different ammo types so I might get a better idea this way as opposed to a bipod and rear bag like I was using.

Still want to shoot a passing score on a 50 yard target but I haven't gotten consistent MOA groups yet at 50.  I'm beginning to think the 25 yard one I shot was a fluke.

I finally got to do this, but I’m still locked out from the 50yd target, so I used the 25 at 50 as well.

Shot both the Bergara B14r and the 10/22. It was 40 degrees with about 50% humidity. A light right to left wind.

10/22 25 yd SK match. 23/25

10/22 50 yd center x. 11/25

B14r 25yd sk match. 23/25

B14r 50yd center x. 15/25

I did try 100yds, but was out of good ammo by time you I got to it.  They were bad.

I didn’t know if the one with question marks by them counted, but upon reading the rules they do. As they pass a gauge test.

I did t take photos of the guns and ammo at the range.

It may be easier for scoring if it was just a black dot instead of with a ring. You hit the dot, tack driven. If you can see any white of the paper between the tack and the bullet grease ring, tack not driven.

Not sure how many ppl have a scoring gauge, but it appears to give more leeway than just the grease ring.

The copier paper I have been using kinda sucks for accurate scoring - the hole punched is a LOT smaller than the bullet.

If I plug the hole with a bullet, that bullet looks huge compared to the hole.

I was looking at the Champions Choice web site.  They have 3 scoring gages - two optical types and one plug-type.

Is it acceptable to use a scoring gage?  Is a plug-type okay?  How about an unfired bullet used as a scoring gage (a plug)?

I didn't order one because I didn't want this fun, challenging shooting activity to become "gamey".

Okay, so, despite what I said above, I did it anyway.  I bought a scoring gage, two of them, in fact.   One is a magnified plug-type, the other is a magnified overlay.

I'd never used one before and they caught my interest.  In trying them out, I learned something, too.

I print my targets on plain, white copier paper.  I don't use the special buff-colored paper used for Official NRA targets.

When punctured by a 22LR, the paper gets a ragged hole.  There is usually a small hole (paper missing) surrounded by radial tears.

When viewing these with my scoring gage, as it turns out, the hole is only about 1/3 the diameter of the bullet!

The radial tears are irregular but extend from the edge of the hole usually to the full diameter of the bullet but never significantly beyond.

I would have never thought that but had never before measured anything.  So, I learned something.

Now I want some of that special paper.

Sounds like a better backing to your target is what you need to make better holes...

I DID IT!!!!

I finally found some ammo that my rifle really likes!  I have attempted this challenge with Eley Match, CCI SV, SK HV, Federal Auto Match, and didn't even bother with any of the cheap bulk stuff--that I have 20K rounds of.  Best I've been able to do until today is 23/25 and if I'm going to be honest, 2 of those tacks were questionable.  So lets say my best until today was 21/25.

I got my first brick of SK SV in on Saturday.  After about 10 rounds I knew something special was happening so I put up a 25 yard tackdriver target.

First time 25/25--and for giggles, I drove the 5 bottom tacks too

Rifle is a Bergara B14R Left Hand
Optic is a Vortex Diamondback 4-14 Tactical
Walmart knockoff Harris bipod.....can't remember if it's a Champion or a Blackhawk
Squeeze bag under the stock
Ammo is SK Standard Velocity (yellow box)

I shot 2 more targets today.  (at 50 yds this time!)

First was 21/25.  Second was only 19/25.   I'm not going to bother posting pics because I know I can do better.  I know I can do better because I went back and fired a second (and one third) shot at the tacks I missed and ended up with a 24 and a 25.

This game is frustrating, challenging, and FUN!  I'm going to practice some more before I post another target, and I think I'm also going to swapped my Razor 4.5-27 over from one of my big rifles.

ETA:  and I have another beautiful day today.  I absolutely love having a backyard range and neighbors that don't mind a little gunfire in the evenings

I found the 25yd targets (tacks are .2") so I tried again at 25 yards.  This time I used my Vortex Razor 4.5-27.  I couldn't use a lot of magnification and still focus at that close range, so I only went up to about 12x.

22/25 and 21/25.  With the exception of 1 shot that I jerked the trigger (when my stupid phone went off) even my misses at least cut black.  I just ordered a few more bricks of this SK SV--expensive, but good stuff!

Score, schmore,... that's good shooting!

I recently bought a new scope.  Part of my requirements when selecting that scope was that it could focus down to 25 yards or closer on max magnification.  The one I ordered can go as low as 10 yards.  This game highlighted a need for that close focusing ability, where my old scopes could only go to 50 yards.

ETA:  It would be nice if we could take mulligans on misses if the bottom example and sighter dots are drilled!

Nice to get back out there and pass the 25 yd version.

I need to try some of that yellow box SK and see how my rifle likes it.

I have a new CZ457 to try too.  I wanted the Chassis MTR version but couldn't find one so I just ordered the VPC version (standard chamber, not match chamber).

Got on CZ's web store and ordered the MTR suppressor ready barrel separately.

It will end up costing more than the Chassis MTR if I could have found one, and it won't have the cool green chassis with orange trigger guard, but I will have 2 different barrels to try, and hopefully one of them will play nice with some of the ammo I have on hand.

I'm not ready to buy Eley or Lapua ammo just yet.

I am a little concerned the test target that came with my rifle doesn't look so great at 50 meters.

I got all excited the last time.....I'm gonna let you guys decide.  Did I clean this one?  (I also shot the bottom five 3x each....only miss I'm seeing is the first sighter cut black but not the center)

I made a few changes to my rifle--went back to my Vortex Diamondback Tac 4-16 because it will focus at 25 yards and my Razor won't.  I also just installed a Timney "The Hit' trigger.

Ammo used was SK Standard Plus (yellow box).  I shot off the same cheap Harris knock-off bipod and a beanbag under the rear.

Again, I forgot to take a pic of the rifle in position today, but it's the same setup as previous.

Great shooting!  There are 2 or 3 that are right at the edge that are hard to call, but it's definitely a passing target and possibly 25/25.  Maybe run it through a scoring app and see how it does.

I'd be very proud of that target.

Great shooting!, it's a clean (25/25) in my book.

The bullet is quite a bit larger than the hole it leaves in plain, white, copier paper.  You can use an unfired bullet as a plug-type scoring gage if you are unsure of one or more of the hits.

Using an unfired round confirms 25/25😎

Thanks

Rifle is a B14R lefty with a rattle can job.  I like the stock, but hate the dalmation light gray/black flecks.  Stock pack is a cheap $7 Amazon.  Bipod is a Harris knockoff from Wallyworld.  Optic is a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16 in IOR rings.  The only 'trick' parts of this rig are the Timney 'The Hit' trigger and the Harrell's tuner I just installed.

I ran another 25yd tackdriver target yesterday--at 50 yards.  19/25 and I'm fairly certain that I would have cleaned the 50 yd target.  I was also shooting my new KYL (Know Your Limits) rimfire target.  The little 1/4" swinger got smacked around more often than not too.

I started shooting these tackdriver targets a few months ago, and they're a fantastic tool for learning how to shoot better.  It's very satisfying to see tangible and repeatable improvements from previous attempts.

I've been playing with the 25 yd targets for awhile now, and I think I figured something out.  Without an aiming point in the middle of the dot to hold on, I'm not as consistent as I'd like to be.

To remedy this--and to give me something to do during a Teams meeting that didn't require my full attention--I made a new target.

26 diamonds that measure .15"--25 diamonds for score, and a single diamond at the bottom for zero confirmation or adjustment.

Target was shot at a measured 25 yards.

Rifle is the same B14R lefty I've posted before, Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16, Timney trigger, Wallyworld bipod, and the recently installed Harrell's tuner is set at 140.  Ammo is SK Standard Plus.

I spent an entire Saturday clearing brush to open up the range at my new house. I've been shooting at least a box/day at either 50 or 25 yards, and the practice really shows!  I only missed one diamond, and that was only by .06".

I'm pretty happy with the results today
